THE SUNDAY STAR, Special Dispatch to The Star. DES MOINES, Iowa, February 27 (NANA)—Gov. Franklin D. Rox velt of New York received more votes than any other presidential in a straw ballot which has completed in President Hoover's home State by the Des Moines Register- Tribune. Roosevelt’s margin over Hoover was 53 votes. Here are the final figures of the poll: Roosevelt, 18,817; Hoover, 18,764; Murray, 16,508, and Smith, 7.693, with Baker, Ritchie, Dawes and Young trail- n| g. Although Towa is traditionally & Re- publican State, more than 71 per cent of the votes cast were for the Demo- cratic presidential possibilities Home County for Hoover. Cedar County, where Hoover was born, returned 187 votes for the Presi- dent. Roosevelt came second with 123 Voters were asked to state their 1928 stand as well as their present prefer- ence. Hoover's total in the same group of voters in 1928 was 42.480 and Smith’s was 22,672 Approximately 56 per cent of the 1928 Hoover vote con- sequently was shown to have drifted to other candidates during the interval, as had approximately 6 per cent of the previous Smith vote in the same group. Hoover led in votes from women, receiving 8,333 or 30.7 per cent. Smith was second, with 6,509 or 23.9 per cent. Hoover was the favorite in the cities and towns, with Roosevelt a close sec- ond in the cities, getting 266 per cent to the President’s 28.3 per cent of the city vote. Murray Rural Favorite. Murray was the favorite in the rural vote, his agricultural platform of “but- ter, bread, beans and bacon” appeal- ing to the Iowa farmer strongly. Murray received 37 per cent of the farm vote, while Roosevelt came sec- ond with 28 per cent. Murray already has established headquarters in Iowa after comg}etms’ three public appear- ances in the State. The ballots received were equivalent approximately to 10 per cent of the normal general election vote in the State. In the same poll partial returns on the question of retaining the pres- ent liquor laws shoved 17,836 against and 18,014 favoring them. The re-election of United States Sen- ator Smith W. Brcokhart was favored by 6,583 and opposed by 9473. These returns showed the triumph of the unexpected as clearly ar had the pres- idential ballot.
