CHAPTER XLVL PTERWARD, Judy was able to look back and see that it was | on that New Year eve that she definitely gave up the struggle against Eunice. ‘That struggle, begun on her wedding night, when Eunice was a mysterious menace hidden in Stan's words and Judy did not know what she was fight- ing, was ended in the young wife's mind. Judy had withdrawn from the duel, not that Eunice had overcome her—simply because Judy’s loyal heart had failed. The trouble was Stan. Stan suddenly didn't matter. Stan’s un- divided love did not seem a thing worth fighting about. She thought it out in 50 many words in the weeks which followed the dis- astrous party. ‘This was like breaking through s crust of dreams into a cold and lone! world of reality. She was able to I back with a feeling of pity for the Emr young fool who had given such vish devotion and worship to a sad- ly spoiled young man who had nothing but his good Icoks and a charm born of imprudent essurance to recommend him. Pictures of that losing struggle passed through Judy's mind like fig- ures in a pantomime. The frightened young bride, striving so desperately to | come up to the things expected of her. She thought of those early days when she had tried to fit into the life of the Country Club. Thought of the forced the Beach House. Thought of the humiliation of Eunice’s Scarlet Ball .. .and the gray starvation of the city which followed. That strange chapter of her life—a terrifying experience into which she had been dipped, as one dips in and out of & nightmare. She was grateful for those dreary, gray days. They had taught her the value of comfort and security. Decent | clothes. Warm rooms. Above all— peace of mind. These were things to cling to. One could put up with bro- ken dreams and a lost love, were warm and well fed—all the ro- mancers in the world to the contrary. This was a new Judy. A clear-eyed, distllusioned Judy. Suave and pleas- ant and pleasantly sophisticated. A Judy grown a little hard. She and Stan never quarreled now. They were as_courteous as two ac- quaintances. Judy had moved to a separate bed room. She did not sleep well now and her restlessness kept Stan awake. In this separate room she could snap on the light, during those wakeful hours. and read until she fell aslecp. She rarely saw Stan except in the company of the others. Judy had given up begging for a home of thew own. And, quietly, with no explanation, she had withdrawn from the Lock- wood crowd where she had stuggled so desperately to maintain her place. She never accompanied Amy down to the Patty Warren shop to smoke mono- gramed cigarettes and listen to Pat- ty's sparkling—and Georgia's bitter— gossip while Patty innocently displayed tempting sport ensembles before their envying eyes. She did mot go to Eu- nice’s bizarre bridge luncheons and when Stan wanted to go to the Wil- son’s dances she was very broad- minded about it. “There’s no reason in the world why you shouldn't go if you care to.
