Mex., November 12. —The thousands of persons throughout the country who peid $1 each for tick- ets in the Saratoga Sweepstakes lot- tery in the hope of winning prizes ag- gregating $400,000 may be interested in knowing that they didn’t have a chance. In the first place, there was no $400.- 000 to pay the purses, it developed in Federal Court yesterday, although the Government alieges more than 1,000,- 000 tickets were distril L The six modest promoters of the In- ternational Sweepstakes Association had agreed to split among themselves at least 50 per cent of the proceeds. And then, of course, there were the agents' expenses in selling the tickets. After that would come the prize money, which proved to be not any. Agents Held Money. Details of the lottery set-up were given from the witness stand by Harry Benjamin of Albuquerque, N. Mex., treasurer of the association, in the trial of 10 men charged with conspiracy to wiolate the Federal anti-lottery laws. Benjamin pleaded guilty and testified for the Government. He declared the promoters “wanted to give the public ® square deal” The treasurer said that all the money he ever handled was $2,000. Amador Y. Tries, a Juarez, Mexico, attorney, testified that, on last August 2, C. L. Ritt of Albuquerque, president of the association, said the drawings could not be held on August 4 “be- cause the agents have not turned in their money.” Ritt, according to Tries, said only $1,100 had been turned over to him.
