B-S DEDICATIONS HELD | FOR TWO SCHOOLS Whitwell and Ballou Speak at Park View—Ceremony at Whittier. ‘Washington public school teachers were praised for their efficiency last! night by George Whitwell, newly ap- pointed member of the Board of Edu. cation, in ceremonies marking dedica- | tion of an addition to the Park View | School. | Mr. Whitwell declared residents of | the District owe a debt of gratitude to Congress for generous educational ap- propriations made in recent years. H predicted the system soon would pos- sess buildings and other facilities on a par with the high school faculty standards. ‘The speaker sald Dr. Frank W. Bal lou, superintendent of schools, had bee! persistent in his efforts to obtain ad quate quarters for the rapidly increas- ing school population. Improvements Are Named. Dr. Ballou, also a speaker, told of recent physical improvements. He inted out several other additions were be dedicated this week. | Lieut. Karl B. Schilling, Assistant Engineer Commissioner, presented the keys to Miss Emily Scrivener. Mr:,; George A. Corbin, president of the Park View Platoon School Parent-Teacher | Association, gave Miss Scrivener a floral offering. Among the other speakers were Henry Gilligan, member of the Board of Education, and Seldon M. Ely, su- pervisor of the fifth division, public schools. ‘The Whittier School addition also was dedicated last night. The Mancr Park Citizens’ Association and school of- ficials united .in presenting a program which formally closed another chapter in Washington’s portable school history. Gilligan Defends Proposal. Henry Gilligan, member cf the Board of Education, defended his proposal, made recently at a school board meet- ing, that religious training be incor- porated in the public school curriculum, as part of the character education pro- gram. “Character education,” he said, “which 1s n°t based on religion is no character education at all.” Other speakers on the Whittler addi- tion dedicatory program included Rob- ert L. Haycock, assistant superintendent in charge of elementary schools, and Dr, Julia Hahn, recently appointed super- vising principal of the third division. The structure was presented to Miss Elsie Green, principal, by Charles B. McGrew, represent! the municipal architect. Henry W. Seaquist, president of the Mancr Park Citizens’ Asscciation, pre- sided over the exercises. The program was completed by music presented by members of the Paul Junior High School Orchestra end the Whittier Glee Club led by Miss Lucy E. Hopkins.
