October 3.—Due prin- cipally to effective steps taken by the United States and Venezuela towards nermelization of production, Valentin R. Garflas, foreign oil department man- ager of Henry L. Doherty & Co.. esti- mated today that the world prob2bly will produce about 39.000,000 less bar- rels of petroleum in 1931 than it did last year. More than 75 per cent of the decrease | in producticn in the United States is | t by the increase in production in | Russia, Rumania and Persia which Gar- fias says emphasizes the futility of try- ing to remedy world-wide conditions in any commodity by controlling but few of the sources cf supply. . - | POTATO MARKET. GRAIN PRICES DROP T0 NEW LOW MARKS Buying Support Disappears in Heavy Selling Movement as Exports Decrease. BY JOHN P. BOUGHAN, Associated Press Market Editor. CHICAGO, October 3.—Forced down- ward by pronounced weakness of se- curities, ail grains tumbled today to new low-price s for the season. May wheat established a new bottom record unequaled by that delivery since organized trading was initiated here. Stop-loss selling developed in all grain pits, and buying support, which of late had been much in evidence, disappeared as the markets plunged down, with North American wheat export business apparently at a standstill. Wheat closed nervous, 1%al1% cents lower; corn, lal® down; oats, 12a% off, and provisions varying from 7 cents decline to 5c gain. Reports of generally excellent wheat crop prospects in the Southern Hemi- sphere were accompanied by a contin- ued decline of Argentine exchange. Another boarish factor was talk that with practically every wheat export country underslling the United States an advance was unlikely despite present low prics. The main depressing influ- ence, however, was liquidating sales consequent upon instability of the stock market. Corn price breaks went hand-in- hand with downturns in securities and with persistent big receipts of corn here, 245 cars. ‘This total contrasted with 108 cars a week ago and 121 at this time last year. Primary arrivals of corn w-re 696,000 bushels, compared with 522,000 on the corresponding day last weck and 439,500 & year ago. Oats gave way with corn and wheat, Provisions were bid up by cash in- terests, notwithstanding downturns in hog_va'ues. WHEAT December Close. 457 _CORN December March . May’ OATE May. Total trade with Latin America amounted to $1,466,918.000, a decline of 20.5 per cent from the high level of 1929, and an increase of 6.5 per cent above that for 1016, according to Feiker's report. ‘With American investments in Latin America placed at between $5,000,000,~ 000 and $5,500,000,000, the Commerce Department official said about three- fifths was in South America. Two= thirds of the aggregate investments, Feiker said, were composed of direct investments of American corporations in mines, public utilities, plantations and other properties. American hold- ings of securities, principally govern- mental obligations of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru, he said, composed the remainder.
