From behind the locked doors of the laboratories of the R. C. A.-Victor Co. at Camden, N. J., comes wi of radi- cally new developments in' television, surpassing in quality anything hereto- fore exhibited to the public. Few have seen this new visual sys- tem and the developments have been shrouded in . It was learned, on unquestionable authority, however, that the system, stfll in-its experimental stage, does away with revolving parts and with the complicated scanning disc used in practically all existing systems. ‘These two factors are said to have w!- sented the most serious obstacles practicable television. Cathode Rays Used. The cathode ray tube, rather than the neon light, is the heart of the R. C. A-Victor television system. An electron gun, which fires light rays into the tube several million times a second, supplents the revolving scanning disc. The result is declared to be a television picture that resembles the movies, hav- ing a blueish-white tint, and without the annoying flicker. \ So substantial has been the in both transmitting and recelving ap- paratus that one prospective television station is holding in abeyance its plans until Fall, at which time it is ex- pamd the R. C. A.-Victor transmit- ter will be avallable. Station KMOX at St. Louls, operated by the Colum- bia Brondcuunz system, informally has asked the Federal Radio Commission to defer its hearing for an experi- mental television station until Septem- ber, in view of “impending develop- ments” in television. Speculation Aroused. ‘There, has been much speculation within $he radio industry as to what R. C. A. is doing in television. That company has been content to plug away in its laboratories, with the avowed purpose of Kmduclng a “fool- proof” receiver for use and has been most secretive about its line of attack in the experimentation. ‘The laboratory apparatus of R. C. A.- Victor produces a picture of 'l’l lines, as against the recognized levision standard of 60 lines. With thfle ad- ditional lines per “frame,” according to engineers, greater clarity of the re- ceived image is made possible. The picture is reproduced on the bulb of the cathode ray tube and is sald to be visible a good distance from the re- ceiver, obviating the need of *“peep- ing” at the received image. The cathode ray tube is not new in television experimentation. Failure of the tube to respond quickly to light, however, caused its abandonment in the early visual broadcasting days. With the electron gun, however, this inertia is overcome, it is declared. The tube now costs about $85 and has a life of about 875 hours, but production costs could be reduced many fold if it is adopted as standard apparatus, pot- sibly to as low as two or three dollars. |Connl:hl 1931) KILLED WHILE ESCAPING RALEIGH, N.
