B—6 RARE BOOKS FOUND SELLING FOR DIME Valuable ~ Volumes Often Picked Up for Trifling Sums Bring Good Prices. By the Assoclated Press. WEXW YORK, June 4-—Possibly none of those thrills which are supposed to come once in a lifetime can equal that of picking up a book for 10 cents and selling it for $10,000—or even $1,000. That there are plenty of bocks in the world that sell for $1,000 or more has been demonstrated time after time at book auctions and private sales. In fact there is a bookshop in New York which sells nothing but books and manuscripts priced at $1,000 or_more. Do any of these extremely valuable books ever come to light in attics, old trunks or in the dime bins of book stores? Yes, occasionally: just enough times to_cause hope to spring eternal in the heart of the bibliophile that some day he will ccme upon a copy of Poe's first volume of verse or some other rare and valuable work. Finds First Edition. Just the other day Mrs. Charles L. Couch, wife of the president of a Buf- falo coal firm and & book collector, at- tended the sale cf household effects and antiques in a Buffalo home, buy- ing a half dozen books for 25 cents each. Later she found that one, @ copy of Hawthorne's “Scarlet Letter” was a first_edition, usually quoted at more than $1,000. Although more than 2,000 coples of the first edition cf the “Scar’et Letter” were published about the middle of March, 1850, time has taken its toll and a few surv oday. As a biblio- grapher observe: The ‘Scarlet Letter" has done uncommonly well for a book that jnaugurated its commercial career for 75 cents a copy. It has become, particularly in recent years. ore of the eat cllecting desiderata of American iterature. “At the sale of the Wakeman col- lection of American authors in the Spring of 1924 a copy of the first edi- tion, which Hawthorne presented to his sister Elizabeth, sold for $350. In De- cember, 1928, another copy of the first | edition, inscribed by Hawthorne to his sister-in-law, brought $1.250. At that time ordinary good coples of the book without inscriptions were be- ing quoted at from $200 to $300 in booksellers’ catalogues. The upward trend has become so pronounced, how- | ever, that succeeding scasons are Cor-| tain’ to record advances in value, par- ticularly for fine copies. Success From Start. This turned out to be a fact. Later eatalogues quoted the book ebove af thousand dollers. Only one other of | Hawthorne's books has a greater value. The pinnacle was attained by “Fan-| shawe,” for which Hawthorne unwit- tingly created the mariet through sup- pression. While “Fanshawe” is & rarity it can- not compete in bibliographical or ro- mantic interest with “The Scarlet Let- ter,” considered one of the few great roductions of American letters. The atter was a success from the start. The first edition was exhausted in 10 days, two more_ followed quickly, and for 80 years it has remained a steady seller. | The first edition was bound in brown | cloth and bears the imprint of Ticknor, | Reed & Fields of Boston.
