TA—16 #** CHEMISTS FINDING | WILD PLANT VALUE New Sources for Food and Drugs Revealed in Studies of Many Weeds. BY THOMAS R. HENRY. Hundreds of weeds and wild plants now are being studied by the carbo- hydrate division of the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Chemistry and a rich source of starch has been féund. From this root a flour can be made which was the chief constituent of the bread of the Seminole Indlans when they were hard-pressed in their wars with the whites. Western Plants Studied. Most of the plants studied to date are found west of the Mississippl. This is because the chief source of “tips” regarding their fcod and other value lies in the reports of ethnolo- gists who have studicd the food habits of various Indian tribes. The Eastern Indians were largely killed off before anybody took the trouble to examine their menus. The plints are being gathered by Forest Service workers in co-operation with the chemistry bureau. Each plant is first given a hasty | analysis, after an examination of the references concerning it. , This reveals whether it is worth being set aside for | THE EVENING STAR.
