HEAVIER PRODUCE SHIPMENTS NOTED Berries, Asparagus and Salad Greens Feature New Crop Movement. The rush of produce shipments near the end of May was mostly fruits and green stuff from the South, says the United States Department of Agricul ture Bureau of Agricultural Economics Market News Service. Recent output week by week has been heavier than it ‘was last season owing to gains in acre- age and generally better ylelds. Interest has shifted somewhat to the new crops. Berries, asparagus and salad greens are coming from midseason shipping sec- tions. About one in five cars of po- tatoes shipped is filled with old North- ern stock from storage. Apple shipments amount to about 50 caricads a day, of which perhaps half a dozen are Eastern fruit. The heavy shipments of most fruits and vegetables and the slow de- mand are responsible for a low general price level, but gaps between shipping season of the different producing sec- tions in late May brought price gains in berries, celery and lettuce and a firm market position for potatoes. Berry Market Firm. The strawberry season by the end of May extended northward as far as Maryland in the East and Illinois in the West. The height of the country-wide strawberry shipping movement scems to have passed, although tmportant north- ern shipping States do not begin until June. Supplies are heavier than last season, but there was scarcely more than half a crop then and the present crop, although larger, 1s less than av- erage. The berry market shows strong action compared with most other kinds of produce and prices, although less than they were a year ago, are not es- pecially low and the recent tendency has been upward, owing to the late- ness of some midseason producing sec- tions. Some of the highest prices in producing sections are those reported from Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland, where best varieties brought top of $7 per 32-quart crate near the end of May, but most sales were from $2.50 to $5.50. Supplles appeared to be moderate at shipping points. de- mand active and market firm. Eastern Shore berries range from 10 to 20 cents per quart basis in large Eastern mar- kets, and Norfolk berries, 8 to 17 cents. North _ Carolina _ Klondikes brought top of 28 cents in Boston, but most sales of North Carolina berries were from 8 to 20 cents in Eastern cities. Supplies of berries are likely to continue moderate through the season, although the 10 late shipping States have a crop expectsd to be at least 10 per cent greater than last season. Asparagus Sells Higher. Sales of New Jersey, Maryland, Dela- ware and Pennsylvania asparagus showed an upward price tendency in some large markets, especially New York, reaching $2.50 to $3.25 per dozen bunches for the large stalks and $1.75 to $2.50 for medium sizes. Lateness of a part of the crop is supposed to account for the upturn. Pennsylvania and New Jersey spinach of the Savoy type brought rather low prices at 25 to 50 cents a bushel. Prices of Southern corn are tending lower. Southern cucumbers also bring lower prices. Peas from North Carolina have have been fairly undant in most Northern markets, with prices on job- bing sales $1.50 to $2 per bushel. Vir- inia peas brought $1.50 to $1.60 per fmmp-r in Baltimore. Although potato shipments are again Hberal from the have been feeling the effect of previous WEEKLY FINANCIAL HIGH LIGHTS By the Assoctated Press. Brokers' loans. .. Federal Reserve ratio. New potal rieties are selling at $1 to $1.15 per 100 pounds in producing sections and from $1.75 to $2 in Northern markets. Th white varieties by the barrel bring $3.50 to 84 in such markets as New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Old potatoes are selling rather low a 85 cents to $1 in Eastern and Midwert- ern pmduc!.nf sections. Maine Green Mountains bring $1.35 to $1.85 for job- bing sales in Eastern cities. Steady Apple Markets. Apples seem disposed to clcse the season near the prices. The best ones have been selling at $2 to $2.25 a bushel in the big markets, which is comparatively good for depression times. New York Baldwins are quoted at $2 to $2.25 per bushel in New York, Pitts- burgh and Cincinnati and Virginia Pip- ; pins at $2.25 to $2.50. Shipments of | Eastern apples are becoming light, but there are still fairly liberal supplies of boxed fruit from the Pacific Northwest, which has been selling at firm prices lateiy. Export movement of apples con- tinued fairly active to the end. Ship- ments of boxed fruit were liberal to Germany and the British markets took largest supplies of the barrel pack in the closing weeks of the season. The new apple crcp seems to be shaping up well s0 far as can be determined from early conditions. Unusually heavy pro- duction is expected in Virginia and West Virginia and early prospects are fair to good in the North and West. Shipments of the early varieties of G peaches are on the way and & Jarge output is expected of the later va- rieties in that section. NEW BUSINESS CYCLE GETTING UNDER WAY| Rapid Advance Is Held Retarded by Situation in Building Industry. Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, May 30.—“We antici- pate an irregular reaction in business during May and perhaps June. which could, of course, wipe out the advance which has been made since January,” says the Brookmire Economic Service in’ its current bulletin. The service goes on to say: “We do not believe the reaction will go so far, and incline strongly to the view that a new cycle is getting slowly and hesitantly under way, retarded by the building situation. ““The most outstanding events of re- cent weeks have been the drastic price slumps, extending alike to commodity and security markets. An interesting feature of these declines is that they have in numerous cases occurred after the basic cycle appeared to have turned upward. “Cotton, for instance, just in the last few days has broken through the pre- vious low levels of the season, although consumption of the staple has been rising for several months and there is every reason to believe that the crop this year will be reduced. Rubber in April broke to new low levels below 6| cents a pound, although tire output was already expanding and there had appeared some indications of declining | rubber production. There has since | been a sharp recovery. “Copper and the other non-ferrous metals also have lately made new low- | price records. In these instances it iclnnot be said that ccnsumption has yet begun to expand, and production has not been fully curtailed; neverthe- |less, the situation appears fairly well | liquidated.” into Latin in the thir century.
