AT Phkes botook | Competition When Pub- lic Favors the New “Hayskrim.” By the Assoclated Press. SANTIAGO DE CHILE-—The day of the watery substance known as “helado,” a kind of sherbet, is heading rapidly toward extinction because of the sudden flooding of the market here with real American ice cream. Last’ year an enterprising individual went to the Uniied States to learn ice cream making in its ultimate phase. He had some money, so he returned home laden with American ice cream making equipment. The result was “hayskrim,” which, pronounced by a Chilean, sounds like ice cream. It took with a bang, and imitators sprang up with “helado con crema,” meaning they put cream in their sherbety stuff. ‘This year another factory with Amer- ican methods and equipment is com- peting with the “hayskrim” concern. The newer one calls the product simply fce cream, and has faith that the Chileans will know what it means. But this isn’t all. In this land of cafes and bars that do & land office business, soda bars have sprung up with the coming of ice cream, and even milk shakes, with real pasteurized milk, can be purchased from native soda Jerkers. o CINEMA REACHES FAR PROVINCE IN CHINA Szechuen Now Shows Ancient Newsreel and Comedy Films to Delight of Chinese Audience. PARIS (NANA)—"Everything for nothing,” says a huge card in one shop window here and even the most hard- ened bargain-hunter pauses, either in amazement, embarrassment or sheer skepticism. The “sacrifices formidables” are le- gion and universal and even thess touch the tender heart of the purchaser, ynless, of course, he haj to be a 100 per cent Parisian, which case it is the evidence that needs to be “formidable” to convince him that & shirt or a pair of socks is being of- fered to him for a franc less than its original price. Books are not selling as well did, in spite of the real “sacrifice” the hinterland. In towns so remote that no white man except the missionary attempts to reach them, the coming of the film has forced the use of electric lights. In many of these places the movie house is the only bright spot after sunset. Szechuen is the largest of Chinese rovinces. It is three times as big as ‘exas, and it has a population of millions. But most of it is shut off from the outside world. Good roads, except for a few favored piaces, exist only in the dreams of ambitious officials. One result of this condition is to make newsreels popular with the movie fans. Some of the small houses show only that kind of picture. Age is no barrier and films of events dating before the World War can still be seen. Dramatic thrills, especially when savor of the mysterious or supernaturai, “pack 'em in” in the back country, and the ola American serials have large fol- lowings. Comedy reels, however, are a dead loss unless of the slap-stick va- rlety. ‘The ht of two men pelting each other with custard ples puts a Chinese audience into hysulgcm B Talkies?
