GOLD HELPS GUARD - HALT MOB THREAT Nine Colored Men Held in Alabama Jail for Attack on Girls on Train. By the Associated Press. SCOTTSBORO, Ala, March 26— Cold breezes from the mountains, about 70 National Guardsmen and the sheriff, his nine deputies and several citizens today preserved quiet around the jail here, where nine colored prisoners are held for an alleged attack on two white 1s who were “bumming” their way me on a freight car. A mob that varied from 100 to 300— including local ecitizens and moun- taineers who came to town astride mules and in automoblles—menaced the | jail last night, and the Guardsmen | were called. The crowd lingered for | some time, but as the cold of & moun- tain night increased all but a score dispersed to more comfortable places. Sheriff M. L. Wann said the prisoners gonfessed, and Judge J. A. Hawkins an- nounced early call of a grand jury to investigate the case. Physiclans said the girls were not badly hurt. The girls, cne 17 and one 21, in overalls, were riding in the freight car with seven white youths en route from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Hunts- ville, Ala. Officers said 12 colored men boarded the car near Stevenson, Ala. and ordered the white boys off. A free- for-all fight ensued, and five of the white youths were thrown from the train and the two others knocked uncon- scious. A posse intercepted the train at Paint Rock and took off nine colored men, the two girls and the two injured ths. What became of the cther ree colored men was not learned.
