MAGDONALD FACES | TEST OF STRENGTH £°52 Ministry May Fall Unless Liberals Can Be Won on Employment Issue. By the Associated Press. LONDON March 26.—The British Labor government is to be tried for its life in the British House of Com- mons next week. The prosecuting attorney will be Stanley Baldwin, Conservative leader, who will press a motion, of censure on unemployment_ while the government's cass may rest principally in the hards of Young Johnston, new lord privy seal and unofficial minister of unemploy- ment. make it equal to any country in the world or better.” Can't Forcast Vofe. s Regarding the vote of censure to move against the ment, Lloyd said: “I cannot say which way he Parliamentary party. c] way the party decides, I shali be with them. “I don't think the responsibility for action should depend on & few of us. A very important decision is to be taken Wednesday and it is for those who are claiming independence to help reach that decision.” The fate of the Laborite government is likely to hang on Premier Mac- Donald’s address Wednesday in reply to Baldwin's attack on his regime. Im- mediately after the prime minister's speech the Libcral members will with- draw from the benches of the house and will decide at a party meeting their attitude on the vote to be taken at the close of the debate later in the evening. Will Side With Majority. If Mr. MacDonald's speech is con- ciliatory for the Liberals, it is expected that Lloyd George will lead enough Liberals to support the government to hold it in power. If MacDcnald antagonizes the Liber- als, his office likely will fall. Lloyd George made it clear at today's meeting in Caxton Hall that he favors the continuance of the Laborite gov- ernment to t the advent of the “Protectionist and Reactionary” Con- servative government. was equally outspoken that he would stick with the majorif of his party whatever policy it decides, even though it turns out the Laborites and precipitates a general election. — MOTHER CLAIMS BABY DESERTED IN MARION Parent and Man Companion Are Jailed on Return for Aban- doned Child. Special Dispatch to The Star. MARION, Va, March 26.— The mother of the baby thai was left in a Marion home last Saturday and that has aroused the sympathetic interest of the people of the town has reappeared to claim it for herself. Hospitality afforded the baby. how- ever, has not been extended to the mother. She and the man with her, on both this and the former visit, are being entertained in the county jail. At 1 o'clock Wednesday morning the pair drove up to the house where they had deserted the baby Saturday. The woman went in, aroused the family and demanded her child. The woman of the house requested her to wait until she could talk to a friend on the tele- phone and then called the sheriff, who arrived shortly after and took the woman and the man with her into cus- tody. ‘The case is now in the hands of Judge B. L. Dickenson of the Domestic Rela- tions Court, who is conducting an in- vestigation. Denial was made that the woman is from Knoxville, Tenn., as claimed in the note she left pinned to the baby. Her home is near Pulaski, Va., it is said. She is Mrs. Lillle Ratcliffe Jack- son. She has been separated from her husband for some time and has been living with her parents a few miles out from Pulaski. ‘The man with her and who was with her Saturday night is C. W. Patton of Galax, Va. . Bradford, England, has announced it will not increase salaries of city em- ployes in the next 12 months unless Jegally compelled to. The judge and jury will be the mem- bers of the Liberal party, who last night decided to withhold a definite decision on which way they will cast their bal- ance of power until the Labor program, particularly on unemployment, is ex- panded during debate on’the motion of censure. An adverss verdict by the Liberals, or even any considerable section of | their 58 votes, would mean instant exe- cution for the government—resignation of Prime Minister MacDonald and a new general election to determine the complexion of the next ministry. Government Nervous. It is believed that if Johnston's speech in the censure debate commits the gov- ernment to an unemployment declaration similar to that David Lloyd George, Lib- eral leader, reads today to Liberal par- liamentary candidates, the bulk of the Liberals will vote against the Conserv- ative motion and the government will be saved. There was undisguised nervousness in the government ranks today and some Laborites openly expressed the wish that the Conservatives had been willing to postpone their censure vote until after the Easter vacation, so that John- ston might better have famillarized himself with the details of the com- plete unemployment situation. Lioyd George in Fight. Lioyd George, silvery haired and im- maculate, and witk his verbal rapiers sharpened to dangerous points, faced & packad auditorium of Liberal parlia- mentary candicates at old Caston Hall today in a renewal of his fight for con- tinued control of the party. ‘The crowd gave the war-time premier an enthusiastic reception as he mounted the platform to admonish them to su- port his policies in the Commons.
