PARIS (N.AN.A).—France is paying @ good deal of attention to her rolling stock. Paris in particular is wondering whether it ought not to scrap its street cars in favor of the ubiquitious motor omnibus. But every Paris tram has its day and one has lately encompassed a love idyll of public interest. The wife divorced her hus- band, but in the solitude of the tram car he has been writing some toyching and melancholy verse lamenting the departure and extolling the praises of its former joint tenant. In his appeal against the decision of the court which awarded his wife the divorce, the read- ings of these poems are doing much to lighten the hearing of the case. The car is to circulate on the whole system and the service will be free. In little out-of-the-way pla~es and small towns, where there are no facilities for X-ray work, this innova~ tion should prove an immense blessing. CONFEDERATE, 91, DIES VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass, March * 28 (#).—Lieut’ Charles Strahan, 91. veteran of the Confederate Army, died here Tuesday. He was a native of Baltimore and served during the Civil War with Com- pany B, Maryland Guards. He was wounded at Gettysburg. NEW ORLEANS, March 26.—Reports of wholesale liquor smuggling opera- tions, in which contraband whisky has been fhipped by the carload from this section to the outskirts of Detroit and Chicago, were brought to light here Tuesday by special prohibition agents assigned to an investigation. The investigators said that in Han- cock County, Miss.,, they learned hun- dreds of thousands of dollars worth of liquor had been brought in from “mother” ships by speed luggers from the Gulf of Mexico and sent north. They said the seizure, about three weeks ago, of three carlonds of whisky bore evidence of the ring. and at that time they learned at least seven other carloads had escaped them.
