AMERICAN OPERA COLORING SEASON Two World Premiers by Na- tive Composers Boost Musical Prestige. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 20.—American opera is looking up. Two world premiers of works by American composers—one in Chicago and one in New York—as well as per- formances of other American operatic works, give a decided native tinge to this season’s music. Deems Taylor, who already has one | opera, as well as many other musical | productions, to his credit, invades the Metropolitan on February 7 with his | second operatic offering, “Peter Ibbet- #on,” based on George du Maurier's novel and with a libretto by Constance Collier, who appeared in a dramatiza- tion of the work in 1917 with the brothers Barrymore. This world premier follows the pro- duction of “Camille,” the work of Ham- ilton Forrest, a young American com- poser, by the Chicago Civic Opera Company, earlier in the season. Another American opera, “Yolanda of Cyprus,” composed by Clarence Loomis around a libretto by Cale Young Rice, has been heard several times this season. It first was presented by the American Opera Company in 1929, Incidentally, two of the leading roles of “Peter Ibbetson” will fall to Amer- ican singers—Edward Johnson and Lawrence Tibbett. Taylor, who was born in New York in 1885, and started out with a musical comedy in 1910, is one of few modern American composers to achieve pro- | duction for two Krand opgras. | COPELAND BILL POPULAR | D c An!l lesectmn Mensul‘e‘ Brings Thousands of Petitions. Senator Copeland of New York filed | in the Senate yesterday several thou- | sand petitions “signed by citizens of | his State in favor of the bill to pro- hibit vivisection on dogs in the Dis- | trict of Columbia. In presenting the | Petitions Senator Copeland said: “There can be no doubt of the right of the American citizen to petition. | but I do think that in numbers and tonnage I have received all the peti- tions I need to let me know that there are thousands of my constituents who are in favor of the passage of the bill.” Epucopnl Bishop Named. Y., yesterday was elected bishop of the Harrisburg diocese of the Protestant Episcopal Church on ‘the eighth ballot. He received on this ballot 23 clerical and THE EVELING STAR. WASHINGTON, B R I/ ARY 20, 1931. Grandfather at 32 Is Claim of Florida Man Seeking Work By the Associated Press. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jafiuary 29 —Florida today entered the claim of having within its palmy borders the country’s youngest grandfather. James L. Trwin, director of the City'’s Unemployment Clearing House, encountered the youthful grandpa yesterday, but_declined to reveal his name. The man gave his age as 32 and listed one grandson among his dependents. . Bans Beniamino Gigli, noted opera tenor, is | accustomed to encores, but never be- fore has any one had the effrontery to tell him to “shut up” until yesterday. Gigli was taking a short cut through the kitchens of the Mayflower Hotel vesterday, en route from the hotel gar- | dens to Mrs. Lawrence Townsend's morning concert, when he instinctively | burst into song. It seems that the temperamental chef, | Jacques Haeringer, has a rigid rule | against culinary operatics, holding thet | too much pantry music will spoil the | broth. Without turning to glimpse the | violator of this rule, Jacques shouted a | curt command that'the offender “shut up that noise.” Gigli_did.
