THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY. JANUARY 29, 1931 morethan ever this year In this 1931 campaign f.or 1932, your Community Chest through larger gifts and more gifts must raise $388,000 or 25% more for 1931 than was actually raised for 1930 for 62 local Charities and the American Red Cross Drought Relief. Here are the reasons for the necessary incr eases of 1931: UNEMPLOYMENT— Washington’s charitable organizations have the heaviest burden of unemployment relief in the his- tory of our city. More heads of families are out of work than ever before. There are more families with exhausted resousces; more with broken morale. "More people are sick from privation. There are more people than ever in our city’s history unable to pay all or part of the cost of hospital and nursing care. There are more broken families and more children applying for admission to orphan asylums. There are more people crowding into character- building organizations for wholesome use of unems- ployed time. GROWTH OF CITY— ‘Washington’s steady growth means a steady increase in the number of persons needing the help of charitable and philanthropic organizations. IMPROVED SERVICE FOR NEEDY— The health survey and the family survey, recently completed, recommended improvements in quantity g and quality of service by member organizations. 4 i £ nd 8 : § ‘These improvements are vitally necessary for the for ;xnllai;!em,:d”i hl::l:!selficiwflie"mset?smfl & 5 well-being of our fellow citizens. The people of our city need this year-'round increased service. We must finance it! GIFTS TO BE MADE UP— $100,000 of the Reserve Fund and the $50,000 gift from the Inaugural Committee, originally intended for the Reserve Fund, were added to the regular subscriptions of 1930 to meet the need created by unemployment. This additional sum of $150,000 is necessary merely to stdy even with last year's appropriations to member organizations. Several wealthy contributors have died. Others have left the city. Many who gave last year are now out of work and need aid themselves. Those who can give more in this human emergency must do so! GIVE MORE—THE NEED IS GREATER.
