B—8 WAR DEPARTMENT DROPS RADI SHIP “Flying Laboratory,”l Army Corps Transport Plane, to Be Dismantled. The radio “fiying laboratory” of the Army Air Corps, a tri-motored C-2 | transport plane, which has several | times been a visitor to the National Capital, is to be surveyed for dis- ml‘l"‘ll)mg, the War Department has announced. The laboratory, a sister ship to the plane flown to Hawaii by Lieuts. Lester J. Maitland and Albert Hegenberger, has flown to every part of the United States in all kinds of weather during three continuous years of the hardest kind of service without ever having been in an accident and with only one forced landing. It has been used as an air-testing THE EVENING . and for many navigation instruments. The success of the plane as a flying laboratory has led to the conversion of at least 10 other planes into similar laboratories fer use by varfous com- mercial and Government radio organi- zations. Many of the important radio air de- velopments of the gl.s'. three years have taken place in the big Army plane, according to a report received here from Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, its home station. Radio shielding has been greatly improved, and there has been developed a double voltage generator which eliminates the necessity of a dynamotor when used with the trans- mitter, Tesulting in a great saving of weight. Experiments carried on in the plane in the propagation of high frequency waves have produced valuable results. Preliminary data for the Army “com- mar set,” communication bstween flight, squad- ron and wing leaders and pilots under them in flight, was gathered in the laboratory. ~ Experiments were con- ducted which fostered development of two-way plane-ground communication, the dial system for transmission and reception of code messages and other pleces. of apparatus. New racio sets received by the Signal Corps were checked in flight and many new and experimental types of instruments werc tried out.
