- FINANCIAL, CURB SHARES SNK 10 NEW LOW PONT Utilities and Oils Subjected ““ to Brunt of Heavy Selling. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Specisl Dispatch 1o The Star. NEW YORK, December 17.—The gurd market plunged into néw low ground today, after making a very Jeeble rally shortly before the end of e first hour. *'The market leader, Electric Bond & Share, met professional short selling from the outset and dropped to a mew «dow level. Other leaders stuch as Cities Bervice, Goldman Sachs, American & Foreign Power, Standard Ofl of In- diana and United Light & Power A be- haved similarly. Btandard Oil securities were weak from the opening gong, as tax selling, diquidation and short selling brought out liberal offerings. The following is- sues broke to new lows in the forenoon: Humble Oil, Standard Ol of Indians, Imperial Ofl, International Petroleum, Oresle Patroleum and Standard Ofl of Kentucky. Selling at once veered into the mis- oeéllaneous oils, where Gulf Oil, Indian Tetritory Illuminating B, Lion Ol Plymouth Oil and other active shares broke into new low territory. ‘The Curb's behavior during the fore- noon, with 633,900 shares turned over, the most active two hcurs since Octo- 10-record of 943,500 shares, was similar f0 the selling climax of October. The number of new lows reached during the morning promised that the day would equal, if not exceed, Tuesday, when 231 new lows were registered. The Tecord number of new lows reached in one session was 241 on October 10. Big blocks were relatively scarce at the opening today. Cities Service came out on 13,300 shares at 133, Electric Bond & Share on 7,000 shares at 373, Goldman Sachs on 4,500 at 515, Inter- ‘national Petroleum on 4,400 at 11% and Standard Oil of Indiana on 4,000 at 30. ° Wide breaks also were few during this period, if the 9-point drop in Singer manufacturing. one of the higher priced dustrials, be éxcepted. There were, ‘however, many inactive iesues ticked out. They were sandwiched between cdeh sales, indicative of income tax selling, and “sellers 7,” representing Pacific Coast or foreign selling. Investment trusts, trading_ corpora- , fire Insurance shares, finance companies, natural gas stocks, pipe lines and aviation shares trailed after the * ‘plunging petroleum and public utilities mfr“" noon hour. ~Miscellaneous Industrials and metal issues weakened in the early afternoon. e GRAIN MARKET CHICAGO, December 17 (Special).— July wheat dropped to the lowest level since 1901 on opening trades twday, un- der selling infiuenced by the weakness in Liverpool, Buenos Aires and Winni- gem Old efop months were supported y the Farm Board.
