DETROIT, September 26.—Five hun- dred volunteer workers are engaged in registering the unemployed of Detroit under a plan inaugurated by Mayor Frank Murphy, who took office this ‘week. During the first day of registration 10,407 men and women stood In line yes- terday at the City Hall and 25 other places designated for taking applica- tions. More than 3,000 of them stated that they must have jobs immediately to avold extreme hardship. Each regis- trant was allowed to write on his card names of members of his family who also are unemployed and need work. ‘Workers sald each card ave: d two names. Taking of names will con- tinued through tomorrow. Interpreters are stationed at registra- tion places to assist persons who are unable to speak English. Mayor Murphy is advocating a speed- ing up of all public building programs 10 help relieve the unemployment situa- tion. “It is my plan to draw every city department into the task of securing Jobs for the unemployed at once,” he said.
