Relations Most Cordial. Selection of an American to act in that highly responsible capacity in an empire, which is now endeavoring to break way from its medieval past and establish itself as a progressive modern state, is recelved with great satisfaction here. Relations between Ethiopia and the United States have been increas- ingly cordial since 1925, ‘The present Emperor, who at that time was only the regent of his coun- try under the name of Ras Tafari, took a trip to Europe and was greatly im- pressed by what he saw in Western European countries which he visited. He decided to modernize his own country, but was shocked, a few months after his return to his capital, Addis Ababa, to hear that the British and Italian governments had agreed on a commercial treaty dividing Ethiopia into two mones of influence without even consulting the Ethiopian government. A strong protest was lodged with the League of Nations with the result that that treaty was never enforced.
