Only the high standing of Dr. Robin- gon and the enthusiasm of those who have viewed his apparatus has tended to allay the skepticism that has existed in the United States since the first an- nouncement of his invention last Win- ter. Where broadcasting wave lengths are at present 10.000 cycles apart in! this country and 9,000 cycles apart in| Europe, it is claimed that the Stenode | Will receive stations without hetero- dyne interference on & band less than| 100 cycles wide. In fact, the word Ste-| node is derived from the Greek, mean- ing “narrow path.” The secret lies in “a quartz crystal | that s used instead of a number of | gharply tuned cascade resonant cir- cuits in order to obtain high selec- tivity. The band passed by this crystal is only about 50 cycles. Consequently | any interference on a frequency di ferent from the frequency of the de- sired station by more than 50 cycl ghould be completely eliminated. * * With the Stenode Radiostat the quartz erystal circuit has so sharp a resonance curve that practically none of the side- band frequencies are passed to the suc- ceeding circul Dr. Taylor's Classmate.
