CANADIAN HOUSE PUSHES TARIFF Commons Hopes to Finish Labors Upon Higher Schedules Today. By the Assoctated Press. OTTAWA, September 20.—Hoping to dispose of the government bill for in- creased tariff rates before nightfall and thus permit prorogation of Parlia- ment, the House of Commons prepared for an all-day session today. Sitting until midnight as a commit- tee of ways and means, the House, be- cause of extended debate, made but slow progress with the bill, and at ad- journment had approved only two resolutions. One provided for an ex- tension of the dumping provisions of the customs agt; the other invests the government with power to prohibit im- portation into Canada of goods from any country not a party to the treaty of Versailles. Opponents Criticize. This latter resolution brought sharp eriticism from the opposition, despite sssurances from Premier R. B. Bennett that the power granted by the resolu- tion would be exercised with the ut- most care. The premier said the government en- tertained no suggestion of limiting trade with any country, but in the interests of Canada some such legislation should be available, and that time alone would tell whether it ever would be used “But,* he said, “I assure the honor- able members that if I am alive and have anything to say about it, and conditions arise which call for the ex- ercise of this power, I shall exercise it.” No Spirit of Tl Will. Such action, he said, would not be carried out in ‘any spirit of il will, but &5 a matter of safeguarding the coun- try against unfair competition of a character which, if permitted to go un- restricted, would result in unemploy- ment. Mr. Bennett did not specify what countries or imports the provision was directed at, but the presumption was advanced in the House that it was di- Tected at imports of Russian coal. After disposing of the provision the committee, just before adjournment, took up the clause which would em- power the governor-in-council to re- move the duty in the event of Cana- dian producers taking advantage of the tariff to raise pnce.« APPENDICITIS DEATHS BLAMED ON FADDISTS Diets Are Held Responsible for Increased Mortality From Disease. RALEIGH, N. C., September 20 (#).— Fads in diet, “food faddists and food diet faddists” were pointed out today by Dr. G. M. Cooper, head of the Bureau of Health Education of the State Board of Health, as two probable causes for an almost alarming increase in the last few years in appendicitis deaths. In 1928, Dr. Cooper said in his weekly health bulletin, there were more than 18,000 deaths in the United States at- tributed to appendicitis—a sharp rise in the mortality rate. “The increase in the death rate” he continued, “in the face of the fact during the period in which deaths ha been increasing there has been great improvement in surgical technique and a large increase in the number of hos- pital beds throughout the country, is cuns\deruhly puzzling to medical writers. It is very probable,” he said, “that fads in diet, what might be called food faddists and food diet faddists, together with the habit of self-prescription and increased use of laxative medicines of every description are the chief causes for this increase.” HAWAII TESTING AKALA BERRY FOR MONEY CROP Raspberries the Size of Plums Grow Wild on Barbless Canes in Islands. The berry picker's dream is a reality in Hawaii, where one stands in the ehade and picks raspberries the size of plums or larger from barbless canes. The Hawaii Agricultural Experimental SBtation is testing numerous seedlings of this native berry, known locally as the akala berry, in the hope of de- veloping it commercially. The akala, perhaps more closely re- lated to our salmon berry than to Amer- ican 1espberries, was discovered by Europeans in Hawaii in 1778 and since then has gradually disappeared from the lower elevations. The fruits ordi- narily grow to a diameter of an inch or an inch and a half, some to two inches, according to the annual report of the Hawali Agricultural Experiment Station. The canes grow one or twp inches in diameter, forming a dense underbrush in the forest An attraction for berry pickers, aside from the size of the fruits, is the dis- appearance of barbs from the canes after they are one or two years old. Hawailan respberries have been in- troduced into California, but have never come into general use.
