Becretary of the Interior Wiljur will officially start construction of the $165,000,000 Boulder Dam project on September 17 by driving a silver spike tnto the desert soil near Las Vegas, Nev. From this point the first phase of the great engineering project, building of & branch line railroad some 22 miles o the summit of the Divide, will begin. The next phase of the project will be the establishment of a new town in the desert, to be inhabited by several thousand workmen, and the construc- tion of a wagon road to the dam site. ‘The railroad, bids for which already have been opened by the Union Pacific, will extend from a point seven miles from Las Vegas to within six miles of the dam site. The new city will rise at_the latter point. Elaborate ceremonies have been plan- med for the occasion by the Interior De- partment, with the Governors of the Colorado Basin States, members of the Colorado River and other officials invited to attend. Reclamation ommissioner Eldwood Mead will assist Wilbur in officially initiating the project Another of the preliminary steps, that of securing an adequate supply of electric power for the actual construc- tion work, has been undertaken by the department, which has called for bids from power companies to supply this energy. NEW YORK, September 11.— The world's fourth largest bell, which weighs 20 times as much as the Liberty Bell and can be heard five miles away, was hoisted Tuesday 360 feet up into the belfry of the $4,000,000 Riverside Church, now nearing completion on Riverside Drive, opposite Grant’s Tomb. ‘The Carillon, & gift of John D. Rockefeller, jr., in memory of his mother, all” installed now save for one 14-ton bell, is the largest in the world. It has 72 bells and A range of six octaves, only about one octave less than & piano. The bells in the carillon range from this big fellow, which weighs a little more than 20 tons, down to little treble bells that weigh only 12 pounds and are 18 inches tall.
