Wals FEE FIN. ORROWS EXTEND | COMPANY HOLDINGS Lates! Report Has Con- nected Them With Ward Baking Concern. BY JOHN F. SINCLAIR. Bpeciai Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 11.--George K. Morrow, who, with his brother Frederick K. controls the Gold Dust, Corporation, may acquire the Ward | Baking Corporation as his next ven- ture in the food industry. The Ward corporation is one of the four largest baking concerns in the United Stat In August last year the Morrows took over the United Cigar Stores Co. It was not leng before they used the financial ax and wrote down the sur- plus from nearly $22,000.000 at the end of 1928 to a deficit of $776.000 on June 30, 1929 Since then the Morrows have been busy cutting off other liabilities from the same company. Recently they sold the Happiness Candy Stores, which Jast year reported a deficit of $306,000, and the Mirror Candy Stores to Loft, Inc. while they placed the Neve Drug Store chain, which showed a loss of $418,000 last year, in bankruptcy Last year the United sold its minor- ity interests in Life Savers, Inc Schulte-United Stores, Beechnut Pack- ing Co. and Gillette Safety Razor Co., and made more than $3,000,000 in do- ing so. The company, however, still has minority interests in half a dozen other concerns, including the Ameri- can Safety Razor Co. and the United States Tobacco Co. It owns, as well, the Whelan Drug Stores (about 200). and many cf these units are understood to be making money. George K. Morrow, 57, is a Canadian, After making a business success in Toronto, he came to the United States, and secured the backing of powerful Wall Street interests, supposed to be close to George F. Baker of the First| National Bank. Mr. Morrow is president of the Gold Dust Corporation and the Warner Sugar Refining Co.. vice president of the Standard Miliing Co. and a director of many others, including Remington Rand, Inc.. Remington Typewriter Co. and Christie Brown & Co. Business With Russia. Thomas D. Campbell, the Montana farmer, whose 100,000-acre wheat de- velopment has given him a national reputation, confesses thag he is dis tinctly puzzled at the attitude of many people toward business affairs outside their own Nation. Especially does he feel this way with regard to American business with Soviet Russia. “In a crisis such as we are in, we! could relieve our industrial depression almost immediately by taking our share of the Soviet government's business, which is offered to us and which we are urged to take,” Mr. Campbell says. “We do not have to recognize their government to get this business, as! other countries have, neither do we! have to guarantee our manufacturers 60 per cent of their sales, as England, Germany and Italy have done. Rus- sia is the biggest market in the world for American goods and will take enough of our commodities to keep our | manufacturing plants operating at full | capacity for the next two or three years.” 1 “But will all business men, if doing business with Russia, really be assured of payment for the goods sold?” “There are many things in commec. tion with the Russian five-year pro- | gram which American citizens and American manufacturers should know," replied Mr. Campbell. “Personally, 1 would like to know why there is such a concerted opposition in the United States toward taking the Russian bu: ness offered to us when their commer- cial record to date in regard to pay- ment has been 100 per cent perfect.” | Mr, Campbell returned several weeks ago from another one of his periodic trips to Russia, where he has been ad- | vising the Russian government on mat- | ters of large moment dealing with ag- ! riculture. | Tron Production. | The last industries to reach their post-war record in Soviet Russia have been the heavy industries, that of steel | particularly. American, British, Prench and Ger- man steel manufacturers have sent ANCIAL. THE EVENING RTAR, WASHINGTON. . But it is well 10 remember that Russia ranked fourth in the world in pig iron and steel pro- Guction before the war. The Soviet official figures, just an- nounced, show, however, that this year the gross tonnage production of pig jron and steel per month is exceeding that of the old record of 1913. Here are the figures: Steel. 396,700 350,000 Pig Iron. 345,500 276,700 1929 353,700 395,000 1930 411,200 386,600 Russia’s vast program of internal re- eonstruction probably means that she will not compete with American and European manufacturers in the exporta- tion of steel for many years to come. But the rapid growth of her pig iron and steel industry is another indica- tion of her amazing business strides in recent years. American steel interests are watching this development closely. 1913 . 1923.. Treasury Notes. When Secretary Mellon called Treas- ury notes aggregating $1,149,000,000, 31, per cent interest for redemption on March 15 next. he indicated that the United States Treasury Department is willing to take advantage of the op- portunity to dip into the cheap liquid funds now lying idle in the banks. This new move was not entirely un- expected. The Government is required to give six months’ notice in advance, and an announcement before September 15 regarding these notes was in the air. But_apparently the quick reception given to the Government’s 2% per cent issue, to be offered on September 15, has ‘been sufficiently encouraging to lead the Secretary and the Treasury officials to believe that this entire issue of over one billion dollars, drawing in- | terest at 3'5 per cent, should be retired | next March. RICHARDSON. Special Dispaich to The Star. NEW YORK, September 11.—Bonds | | Aluctuated irregularly in quiet trading today, after a higher and more active opening. While the activity at the start could be traced to the psychological ef- fect of the heavy oversubscription of the $325,000,000 offering of Treasury 1-year 2% per cent bills, later trading 163,000 of new bonds offered. rates were unchanged. Prime Group Firm. The prime group held the advances made at the opening, and some issues continued active throughout the session. Two features were Great Northern 7s, up 7, and Philadelphia Co. 55, which were turned over in large blocks, though the price clung to its 1930 peak. Small gains were made by Pennsylvania 415s. Frisco “A” 4s, Northern Pacific 4s, Chesapeake & Ohio 4lus, American “Telephone 5'.s, Columbia Gas 5s, ULili- ties Power Light 5 and American & Foreign Power 5 A highlight of the convertbile group was the heavy selling of International Telephone & Telegraph convertible 41%s. The price fell off nearly a point_to equal the previous low for the year. The bond has been sinking gradually for some time, chiefly because the conver- sion price up to July 1, 1932, at $64.1564 per shire, is out of line with the cur- rent market for the stock, around 43. However, the bond, considered merely on its owty merits, is equally secured with the company's $35,000,000 debenture 4125 and $50,000,000 debenture 5s, both of which are seiling on slightly better than 5 per cent basis. Junior rails_ were divided in their tendencies. _Denver & Rio Grande Western 5s, Erie general lieh 4s, Erie 55, Seaboard Alrline 6s, and Western Mary- land 4s improved. There were small losses in Chicago & Eastern Illinois 5s, St. Paul 5s, Missouri-Kansas-Texas ad- justments, Southern Railway 4s, Wabash 4155 and Boston & Maine 5s. Tractions were active. Interborough bonds were all stronger, as a reflection of the election to the board of three representatives of the Stockholders Protective Committee. It is now be- lieved that the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Co. can swing the Interborough | around to the unification scheme, with the prospect that security holders of the Iatter road will be amply protected. Industrial Quiet. Industrials were quiet and unchanged Money | equal the previous low for the year. The loss was later regained. The company is planning some new financing, said to total $10,000,000, according to Los Angeles advices. The foreign department was dull. South American bonds were inclined to sag slightly, though there was so little trading in most of the issues that no | definite tendency could be detected. Ar- gentines held well, slightly below their | closing levels of Wednesday. French, | German and British credits were firm. Italian bonds were sold. | Washington Stock Exchange SALI & Elec. 45—$3,000 at Washingtor: Rw: 7 { otomac Electric 5% pfd.—5 at 108. Prince Georges Bank & Trust—25 at 35.
