B—8 » MAL DAUGHERTY | BANKRUPTCY ASKED Claims Totaling $77,237.51: Listed by Attorney General Bettman of Ohio. * By the Associated Press. ! COLUMBUS, Ohio, Scptember 11.— | An involuntary petition in bankruptey | was filed today against Mal S. Daugherty, brother of Harry M. Daugh- erty, United States Attorney General in | the Harding cabinet. | Claims totaling $77,237.51 were listed | in the petition filed in Federal Court | today by Attorney General Gilbert | Bettman of Ohio. Daugherty, accord- | ing to the petition, has admitted his | inability to pay his debts and con- sented to be adjudged a bankrupt. | The claims include $52,000 for prom- | ssory notes to the Ohio State Bank, | Washington Court House, of which | Daugherty formerly was president, and | $25.000 for similar notes to the Peoples | and Drovers Bank, also of Washington | Court House. Both banks failed last Summer. | State Superintendent of Banks O. C. | Gray, in charge of the litigation of the defunct banks, and Glenn M. Pine were | the petitioning creditors. Pine claims Daugherty owes him $537.51. | Attorney ~General Bettman said Daugherty owns 705 shares of Ohio | State Bank stock, making him subject | to_double liability. Mal Daugherty came into prominence in 1924 when he was cited for contempt of the United States Senate for refusing to let Senate investigators inspect the books of the Midland Bank of Wash- ington Court. House, of which he was president. The investigators had heard rumors that funds from the leasings of the Teapot Dome and Elk Hills oll flelds might be on deposit in the bank. The Midland Bank later was consoli- dated with the Fayette County Bank to form the Ohio State Bank. 87 Given Mutiny Senfennes.
