PANAMA CITY, July 17.—Production of coffee in Panama now has reached the stage where, for the first time in its history, growers are becoming actively interested in a foreign market for the crop. In the highlands of Chiriqui, a province to the north of the capital, thousands of trees are being set out, and thousands more, planted three to five g!ll’s ago, soon will begin to yleld their | The crop to be picked this! thority, has declared the bean grown arvest. | mated at 1,500,000 pounds, but so rapid- Iy has activity in the reglon increased —especially in K1 Volean district—that Chiriqui is expected to produce five times as much within five years, Planters Not Worried by Shamp. Nor are the planters depressed by the slump in prices which this year so ad- versely affected the prosperity of Costa Rica, Colombia, Rrazii and other big coffee-producing countries For, the remind you, Chirig and, rieh percentage of the ash, fertile of soll sued recently Canada revealed a vas prices bid for the various g ian, for instance, was g 14 ‘cents; Costa Rican 28; Costa Rican, selected 40 cents. The Iatter varlel sponds to the best grown in Pa highland country, according tc Casler, secretary of the Ch mercial Co., which is operat | tation of 5,000 acres there. Willlam Ukers of New York, re- garded by the coffee trade as an au- ‘coming November and December is esti- in El Volcan to be the equal of any in .| negligible, save in the THE EVENING the world. Ukers is credited with hav- ing spent 17 years in making & world- ‘ wide survey of the coffee of all nations. Hard Bean Outputs Small In a map prepared by Ukers, he shows | that although many countries are able to produce hard bean coffee, the out- put is comparatively small. Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, San alvador, Abyssinia, Arabia, Sumatra and Java, all contribute to the market, -/ but the percentage produced, in com- | parison with the lowland grades, is - case of Costa ca. As proof of Ukers' statement, which t was published in 1922 before the large scale production had ever been at- tempted, Panama points to its first prize award at the Ibero-American ex- position in Seville, Spain, recently. An exhibit of coffee grown on the Chiriqui | plantation owned by Enrique Parada was declared the best in quality of any- thing in its class, Statistics recently compiled by the 1- American consulate general here reveal that last year few growers produced over 80,000 pounds of coffee and that the majority fell short of this mark by 50,000 pounds. But production for last vear does not accurately indicate the |to take an_ active interest in it. extraordinary activity in the coffee lands of this country, growers explain, reminding that it takes five years for trees to bear. That production five years hence will triple the 1929 output is conceded by the most pessimistic. Europe Ts Best Market. Curiously enough, the United States, which is famed as a great coffee mar- ket, is not expected to use any great quantity of Panama’s product, although big houses in the States are beginning despite the many inquiries sent to both the American consulate and to George Curtis Peck, United States commercial attache stationed here, Europe is ex- pected to be the better customer, for Europe takes its coffee “straight.” Explanation of this is contained in the fact that the States’ coffee drinkers enjoy their matutinal drink best when it is blended, whereas the continental does not. The latter is rated a con- noisseur of the highland grades, and wants no lowland varieties mixed with it. The small amount of Panama cof- fee exported in the past has gone al- most,_entirely to Europe. But whether hard bean coffee pro- duces the great wealth that Panaman- fans and Americans alike predict, the STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, Province of Chiriqui seriously threatens the prestige of the province of the capi- tal. With the proposed Pan-American );?hl‘l! routed through the front yards El Volean, with a deep-water port at Puerto Armuelles, and with ample water power ready for the taking, the district that was almost unknown 10 years ago now bustles with the activity of California in the early fifties. Bananas Also Imported. The province today is practically un- settled and undeveloped, but each day timber falls to make way for the coffee tree. But coffee is not the ony prod- uct. A few years ago the United Fruit | Co. went into the region—in the lower sections—spent millions, and now has weekly sailing from Balboa, Canal Zone, to Puerto Armuelles, with its ships carrying thousands of bunches of bananas to West coast ports of the } United States. |~ Interesting in connection with the rapid growth of Chiriqui is the active interest shown in its future by Ame: cans. Californians, especially, h: been attracted to the El Volcan tion, where the temperature hovers be- tween 70 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and drops into the fifties, or even forties, at night. Many of the canal workers are reluc- i tle desire to return to the United States.
