An exhibit of coffee grown on the Chiriqui | plantation owned by Enrique Parada was declared the best in quality of any- thing in its class, Statistics recently compiled by the 1- American consulate general here reveal that last year few growers produced over 80,000 pounds of coffee and that the majority fell short of this mark by 50,000 pounds. Curiously enough, the United States, which is famed as a great coffee mar- ket, is not expected to use any great quantity of Panama’s product, although big houses in the States are beginning despite the many inquiries sent to both the American consulate and to George Curtis Peck, United States commercial attache stationed here, Europe is ex- pected to be the better customer, for Europe takes its coffee “straight.” Explanation of this is contained in the fact that the States’ coffee drinkers enjoy their matutinal drink best when it is blended, whereas the continental does not. The latter is rated a con- noisseur of the highland grades, and wants no lowland varieties mixed with it. The small amount of Panama cof- fee exported in the past has gone al- most,_entirely to Europe. But whether hard bean coffee pro- duces the great wealth that Panaman- fans and Americans alike predict, the STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Bananas Also Imported. The province today is practically un- settled and undeveloped, but each day timber falls to make way for the coffee tree. But coffee is not the ony prod- uct. A few years ago the United Fruit | Co. went into the region—in the lower sections—spent millions, and now has weekly sailing from Balboa, Canal Zone, to Puerto Armuelles, with its ships carrying thousands of bunches of bananas to West coast ports of the } United States. |~ Interesting in connection with the rapid growth of Chiriqui is the active interest shown in its future by Ame: cans.
