FINANCIAL MUTUR AGTIVITIES REACH LOW TIDE Ford Plant Vacation Cuts Production to Smallest Volume of Year. { l BY DAVID J. WILIE, ! Associated Press Staff Writer. 1 DETROIT, July 17.—Manufacturing | mctivity in the automobile industry is at robably its lowest point of the year as Ehe result of the closing down of the Ford Motor Co. plants for a two weeks’ vacation period. With the Chevrolet Co., the Ford interests have been ac- counting for more than half the total roduction and sales of the industry so ?ll' this year. The suspension which began last Saturday, and the restricted production schedule of many other companies, conuquenflv means that the industry as a whole is producing very few cars this month. In the Detroit district the shutting down of the Ford plants affected more than 100,000 workers. The possibilities for develpoment in the export phase of the automobile ln- dustry continue to occupy a large of the interest of automotive execu Ves 1~ small part of this interest continues to center around the effect the new tariff law may have on overseas busi- ness. In some quarters allied with the automobile industry the belief is ex- ressed that much of the immediate ?uture development of the industry must depend upon expansion of the business in (orel n fields. ‘The &dustrys leaders realize that in the domestic field they have supplied the motor car for approximately every four persons in the United States and that the registration of automobiles shows the United States has three times as many as all the rest of the world combined. The figures, however, are as of January 1 last, and sales ex- ecutives of the industry point out that thousands of cars that ahnuld have been replaced were carried over into 1930 registry because of business conditions and lack o! employment, rts in circulation !:r some t:n:‘e t Buick would present a comple! l‘i‘::‘e of eight-cylinder models this Sum- mer were confirmed with the announce- ment that the new cars would be. in- troduced on July 26.
