BERLIN, July 15—Prosperity ' and prohibition, or rather its evasion, afe the two pillars upon which American civilization rests. This is the judgment of Arthur Holitscher, German autho: and globe trotter, in his latest, book, “Revisiting America.” “The savings bank book,” he ob- serves, “constitutes the crowning point of an American’s lifework.” As to prohibition, Holitscher main- tains that “the favorite pastime of the American is indubitably the evasiori of rohibition. Lindbergh and Will Rogers as the two most typi- cal Americans today. “Lindbergh and Rogers,” “that is, Lindy and Bill—embody the healthy, undiluted, tempestuous side of the American character, ie., in so far li} ‘:.here is anything left of that side o . Petroleum production in Ecuador now is nearly 14 times that of before the L e putting one over on the law—and, that can be accomplished mocst easily by consuming alcohol, even if he did not care mych for it before prohibition.” Chapter Devoted to Service. One chapter in Holitscher’s book is ‘evotkd 'A) the American conception of *“service.” This word, he finds, “is not only a slogan—it has become a motto, 1f not a principle on the same pn with Open a charge account . . . yow’ll find that it facilitates shopping and saves time.
