PACEANTTOSHOW BRTISH HTORY Stratford-on-Avon -Also to’ Pay Tribute to Bard in Ceremonial. By the Associated Press. STRATFORD-ON-AVON, England, | July 15.—Shakespeare's county, War- wickshire, has completed preparations for & pageant to be given tomorrow and on, the three days foligwing that shall rival in magnificence ®nd historical in- | terest the famous one of 1906. | Warwick Castle is again to furnish | the background. Fully 5,000 performers ' will take part. y All over the county little bands of women have been making costumes ap- propriate to the periods to be enacted, and artists, craftswomen, musicians and dancers have united to make the pag- | eant a success. | Battle to Be Re-enacted. Miss Sybil Thorndike and her hus- band. Lewis Casscn, will recite the p legue, which John Drinkwater written, After a Druids' song, spectators will see barbaric-looking Britons and Romanized islanders e gaged in a conflict, which ends in the victory of the more disciplined Roman warricrs. ! Next will be shown the arrival of St Augustine, an_opportunity for impres-' sive chanting by the male chorus. The third episode covers William Rufus. Medieval pageanty will reach| its zenith 1n the next episode, depicting | “The Passing of Richard Beauchamp, | Earl of Warwick.” ~Beauchamp's re- | mains were brought to Warwick for sepulture in the famous chapel built for the purpcse. Pomp and circum- stance are seen in every part of this episode. Bard's Characters to Appear. Some of the most famous characters | in Shakespeare’s plays and the Bard of Avon himself will appear in the next episode. Then will follow the “stately revels” of Kenilworth in 1575, when| Robert Dudley, Earl of Leycester, spent | & small fortune in his endeavor to cap- | tivate Queen Elizabeth. Some of the music_actually used by the Coventry | mummers on that occasion will be heard. In the next episode, introducing the civil war period, Charies I will be seen just before the battle of Edgehill, and a thrilling scene, depicting a house in| flames, will be presented. Finally will come the regency period | and the visit paid to Leamington Spa in 1819 by the Prince Regent, after- ward George IV. This is a very “dressy” episcde, in which Leamington’s fairest women will appear. Of special interest to Americans is the fact that this .pageant owes its orlzltn to the Women's Institute move- ment.
