A-—10 i PRESIDENT KEEPING OUT OF WHEAT ROW Farm Board to Handle Situa- tion Caused by Slump in Price. By the Associated Press. President Hoover is leaving the situa- tion created by the slump in. wheat prices to the Federal Farm Board. He intends to take no action, it is announced at the White House, beyond conferring with Chairman Legge and other members of the board as occasion demands. The President was represented as | feeling the board was created by Con- gress and its members given the task of dealing with agricultural crises, and that action sh@ld be left to them. Hope Bread Price Drops. The board was hopeful today that| the demand of Samuel R. McKelvie, member representing wheat, for lower prices would have a beneficial efTect upon the wheat market. A cut in the retail price of bread, | McKelvie asserted, would serve to stimu- late consumption, with the latter factor reflected in an increased price for wheat. | Today was the first anniversary of the board's initial meeting thorized $500,000,000 revolving fund, it invested during the year $195.000,000 in | Joans to co-operatives, of which $40,- 000,000 has been repaid. Made Advances for Wheat. The $195,000,000 sum Included the board’s advances to the grain stabiliza- tion corporation with which the cor- g;!l’ltlon ‘made large purchases of wheat both the spot and futures markets. 2,000,000 bushels of wheat Some. back into the market last were put week, with the announcement an iden- tical ‘quantity of the 1930 crop was be- ing purchased to offset the release of this grain. Throughout the year the board has been the target of much adverse criti- cism from members of Congress and others, with its dealings in the grain market the basis of a particularly vig- orous attack. It has been stanchly de- fended by friends of the administration. Dr. Br;;rly on Church douncil. PHILADELPHIA, July 15 (#).—An- nouncement was made today that Dr. Joseph M. TUESDAY, JULY 15, 1930. OKLAHOMA RACIAL TROUBLE CONTROLLED Order for State Troops Following Murder, Allegedly by Colored Man, Is Canceled. By the Associated Press. ERICK, Okla., July 15.—County of- ficials today expressed belief they had under control racial disturbances here resulting from the slaying at Shamrock, Tex., Friday of Mrs. Henry Vaughan, formerly of Erick. Authorities yesterday made and later canceled a request for State troops after colored families had been driven from their homes by mobs. ‘Three companies of Infantry at Ok- lahoma Citys were being mobilized for duty at Erick when Gov. W. J. Hollo- way withdrew the order. The Guards- men were told, however, to hold them- selves in readiness in event of further trouble. Officials estimated 200 colored per- sons had been driven from their homes | by groups of white men, who warned them not to return. Several hundred signers of a “jim crow” petition to bar colored persons from Erick said they favored permitting them to return for their property. Jess Lee Washington, alleged slayer of Mrs. Vaughan, who was a former Uni- versity of Oklahoma and Ada State Teachers’ College student, is confined in the - State Reformatory at Granite, where he was taken for safekeeping. = Nine Men Escape Death.
