The adults are small light yellow beetles, spotted with black. They are related, strange to say, to the beneficial lady beetles which are’ helpful in cutting down the crop of aphids and scale insects. One point to remember is that the bean beetle works fast. A day or two may suffice to ruin a planting of beans, o it will pay to have the spray materials at hand. HOLLYHOCK RU: In many cases hollyhocks which are just commencing to bloom are also be- ginning to lose their lower leaves trom disease. Hollyhock flowers are beauti- ful, but it is the combination of bril- liant colors and bright attractive foliage that makes the hollyhock really so de- sirable. ‘The problem of saving the leaves is not simple, because the trouble is one of the rust’diseases, which are difficult to control. The rust appears as tiny brown dots on the first leaves to appear in early Spring, and, prop- erly spraying should begin at this stage and be continued at intervals right up to flowering time. Bordeaux mixture is the generally recommended spray and, if faithfully applied, wil! greatly reduce the trouble. Old clumps are generally more severely affected than vyoung plants, sc it wili likely pay to subdivide the plants every two or three years: to re-establish their vigor, or, if one cares little about colors, to take seedlings from the multitude tha* spring up about the base of the old plants. The spouting Italian broccoli is not A& newcomer in Aemrican gardens, but | it has gained great popularity in recent years. The plant does not form a head | as do broccoli and caulifiower, but | | rather a branching top, all of which | |is tender and edible and much milder | in flavor than kale. Seed may be sown at this season for an Autumn crop. J | GARDEN FERTILITY A soil constantly cultivated, as is| that of the well kept garden, is rapidly losing its fertility, both through the| plants grown and through the oxida- tion of the organic matter, such as manure and plant materials. The mar- ket gardener of the old days kept the | fertility at a high point by applying | relatively large quantities of rotting | manures. The gardener of today can: | not meet the problem in the same way | simply because he cannot obtain the | manure, Mineral fertilizers are valuable and | | essential, but they must be supplement- | ed by decaying vegetable matter if the | | s0il is to maintain its productive power. | | The home gardener should become | cover crop minded. He should realize that a crop of clover, cow peas or soy beans spaded into his soil will largeiy com- | pensate for lack of manure. Rather | than trying to grow edible crops | throughout the entire growing season, | it would pay the vegetable gardener, | | and also the flower grower with his | floral crops, to sow one of these cover crops at least part of each year. If| one doubts the wisdom of this pro- cedure, he can try the experiment of thus treating part of the garden area. | | tility is adopted. ‘That the garden club movement in our locality is not a passing fad is well attested by the relatively long life of certain of the clubs. The Hyattsville Hortiucltural Society and the Takoma Horticultural Club are each about 15 years old and are still gaining strength each year. These clubs are rapidly becoming institutions in their com- munities and this statement probably applies quite as well to the newer gar- | den organizations. The garden club brings together the people who have an intense love of growing plants and their flowers, gives them a chance to listen to speclalists and to discuss with one another their common problems. Incidentally, the garden club may save its members actual money by making larger purchases at wholesale rates. Surely the garden club movement ls founded on an actual need and may be expected to be permanent and active as long as we have home gardeners. Here and there a club may fail be- cause of poor management, but the well organized club may be expected to thrive and prosper. The Rockville and Bethesda Garden Clubs were entertained in the garden of Mrs. B. F. Elmore, Alta Vista, June 13. Tea was served near the stone fireplace and lily pond. Mrs. George | Hane presided at the business meeting which followed. There was a lovely flower display. The flower show at the Rockville Fair was discussed and the club wishes to extend an invitation to at Hibbert reprovingly. “You've 'ad too much champagne, you ‘ave” he declared, but Hibbert noticed neither the words nor the look, for he had pulled out his pocket case and produced some picture post cards. “I've never shown you these, have I?” he asked, and he handed them over to Stanhope. From among them fell a letter which lay for a minute or two among the cups and plates before he noticed it and put it back, rather shamefacedly, into his pocke! It was a letter he had had only thal morning from his mother in Chelten- ham, a letter so full of praise for his courage out here in France that he would have torn it up in anger only for some indefinable reason he had not dared to do s0. . . . Bitlin’ in her rather poorly fur- nished lonely little house, Mrs. Hib- bert must sometimes have wondered about her son, have read between the lines of his letters. On her side of the family most of the men had been in the Army and she would look up at the miniatures of them which hung in the alcove near the fireplace for fresh courage and fresh bellef. Her husband’s health had never allowed him to think of a strenuous career, but he, too, had concentrated his hopes on this one son, whom, with so much difficulty, they had been able to send to a public school as a first step toward Woolwich and the Royal En- gineers. And when the time and the chance came he had so definitely sought for excuses lo'_g:t off being sent on foreign service t his mother must sometimes have wondered. But, within, he was filled with an _angry jumble of sentiments—that Jealousy which he had often felt where leigh was concerned, resentment inst & boy whom he knew he had wronged, loneliness because everything conspired to remind him of Osborne, misery because it seemed to him Madge was now irrevocably lost. “He said that?” he asked quietly. ‘Yes. I told him about the chicken and champagne and cigars, and he stared at me and sal ‘You're not hat that, are you?'—just as if he thought we were going to chuck it all away. ’ 1 reckon that raid shook ‘'im up more than we thought. I like that youngster.” If Trotter had had it iry him to be malicious, there would have been malice in his words as he ad- drv-e‘cll‘ them to Hibbert, too—the wa; through the smoke a the rald, carrying that Boche under his arm like a baby.” Stanhope was paying no attention to Trotter. “He actually told you he pre- ferred being up there with the men to being down here?” he insisted.
