Ryder Is Accused of Grand Larceny as Firm Fails. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, June 21.—Hailed &ix months ago as a financial genius, bene- factor of colleges and chorus girls, Har- old R. Ryder today was sought on a warrant charging grand larceny as a result of the failure of the brokerage firm of which he was a member. At the age of 37, Ryder was looked upon as one of the rising young men of Wall Street. He was credited with run- ning almost nothing into $15,000,000 and admittedly he had handled $7,000,000 in the last eight months. Thursday his brokerage firm, Woody Co., was suspended by the New York Stock Exchange. Creditors put accountants on the books. They could find only a few hundred dollars in assets and some $3,000,000 in liabilities. Ryder was found, near collapse, at Poughkeepsie, N. Y. and brought back B RESORTS. WILDWOOD CREST, N. WOODS NGTON to the city but not in official custody. Today & warrant was issued for his arrest. He is charged specifically with fnihnl to deliver stock for which he had been paid. According to friends, Ryder blamed the crash of his firm on the sharp de- cline of Stein Cosmetic stocks, which fell from 23 to 8. He Frank Stoltz, Ylesldent of the Stein Co., were said to have formed a pool in the stock. For years Ryder lived sedately and in an unpretentious Brooklyn apart- ment. Then suddenly he moved to Park avenue, “adopted” several chorus girls nnd started out to see the town. He called the “knight Ryder of Broad- w in the clubs where he had become a familiar figure, Last April he gave Union College at Schenectady $200,000 for a new elec- trical laboratory. The cornerstone of Ryder Hall was laid a few days ago. Ryder's two partners in the broker- age firm, Charles L. Woody, jr., and Lucien A. .Hold, said that, although ruined by the collapse, they were de- termined to see the claims of creditors :Tl;:med as fully and promptly as pos- sible. | The bell which sounded the alarm in the Chicago fire has been placed in a museum.
