‘B4 # PLEAFORUNIFORM | [ 7oker mew putps -CODE FOR VEHICLES Highway Safety Conference Says Motorists in States Face Vexatious Problems. Motorists who reside in Washington and find it expedient to become familiar with trafic regulations in Virginia and Maryland are perennially confronted by proplems in driving which the National ference on Street and Highway | #ty insists must be eliminated | through the adoption by cities and| States of a uniform vehicle code and | mihdel municipal traffic ordinance. The uniform code was adopted by | the conference recently at its annual meeting in the Capital, over which Robert P. Lamont, Secretary of Com- merce, presided.as chairman. Agencies working in conjunction with the cor-! ference, including motor clubs and com- merce bodies throughout the country. are urging that the accepted code and ordinance which have been adopted by about half the States be extended to all the States and larger cities. ‘The intercity and interstate aspect of vehicular traffic. together with im- proved roads which have made long ys by automobile practicable, e made uniformity of traffic regula- tions necessary to safety, the. confer- ence said in a statement issued by Col. A, B. Barber, director. “Residents of many towns and cities, such as Kansas City, St. Louis, Louis- ville, Cincinnati, Chattanooga ing, Washington, Philadelphia and New York, find it necessary to be familiar with the trafic laws of two or more nearby States,” sald Col. Barber. “The motorist in driving from one State to another, and ing through different towns and cities, would, if he followed the regulations and driving ractices of his own community, violate flmumenble local ordinances and reg- ulations, and possibly incur accidents, through unflmflhr\ty with the traffic control of a strange‘town. This was cularly true with respect to right and left turns and in the protection of trians at ntersections. “In an effort to eliminate this con- fusion, and to promote a smooth flow of traffic through intelligent driving, agencies working in conjunction with the National Conference on Street and Highway Safety will continue this year to urge upon .the States the adop- tion of the Uniform Vehicle Code and Model Municipal Trafic Ordinance, 'hleh it is sponsoring and prepared irough the combined advice and coun- le| of the traffic experts of the country. ‘Traffic regulations in Washington conform to the model code in several particulars, but not with respect to pedestrian control at intersections or the left turn. Willlam H. Harland director of traffic, has under considera- tion at the present time, changes which would bring current practices in the Capital in line with the practices Tecommended by the conference.
