DOROTHY DIX’S LETTER BOX DOROTHY DIX.—I am an engineer 47 years old. Widower with one child crippled from birth. Have had a hard life. Twenty-five years of war with natives and disease, man and beast, have left their marks upon me. Carry marks of smallpox, love token of a grizzly bear, throat scars from a snow leopard, minus an ear from a poisoned arrow, a bad lip from & shell with the compliments | of Von Hindenburg. No ladies’ man, but loved and was loved by one woman | only—my wife. Came to a small place on a job. Met a little girl young enough | to be my daughter who has fallen in love with me and wants to marry me. Am | fond of her, but not love; that comes to a man like me only once. She insists on mm;gmc me. I need a wife, my child needs & mother, but I am going to South Africa on a job and what about her side of it? Can any love span the gap of a quarter of a century? What abcut taking her from her ordered, dignified life to a rough mining camp. Is it playing the game to let her marry me? I would sooner try to finish a leopard barc¢handed than to hurt he;leveBn a little, Eunice and John were getting mar- ried in the morning. Following the ceremony & wedding breakfast was being served at Eunice's home. Forty ests were invited for the breakfast. nice and her mother had decided to have the guests seated for the wedding breakfast. Had the wedding been an Answer. —Like Desdemona, she loves you for the dangers you have known, and it is easy to see why you have captured her fancy and are the hero of her girlish dreams. Of course, whether you should marry her or not is something that you must settle for yourself, but if your heart is not too deeply buried in your first wife's grave, I should say that such a marriage was likely to bring great | happiness to you both. Nor is the marriage so unfair to the girl as you seem to think. To begin with, life in a little village is generally a pretty dull affair. Nor does it offer | many sentimental, romantic thrills to a girl. Neither does it afford her many opportunities of brilllant marriage. Generaily most of the men who have enter- rise and ability have left tc seek their fortunes in other parts of the world. I ve known of many such communities full of pretty and charming and desirable girls, but in which there was scarcely an eligible male. THE STAR’S DAILY PATTERN SERVICE. One of the most frequent beauty problems that comes to me from my Teaders concerns the condition of the skin on the wings of the nose. Looking directly into her mirror milady can see the enlarged pores, blackheads or flesh ‘worms that are to be found there. Even Wwhen one’s complexion is fine and clear, there are likely to be some large pores at the side of the nose that provide excel- lent traps for dust, grime and face pow- der. Unless the skin is cleansed thoroughly each night and a suitable treatment given, these pores become clogged with oil, dust and make-up and sometimes blackheads and unsightly pimples form and the wings of the nose become red and unsightly. The only way to keep this part of the face clean and healthy is to cleanse, stimulate and refine the skin. Cleansing cream or oil may be used first to take up the surface grime, but to dissolve and remove it entirely and efficiently soap and water is required. A simple and easy method to accomplish this is to from the pores at the sides of the nose bathe with hot boric acid solution for several minutes. This is a very useful and Inexgerulv' antiseptic solution to have on hand always for various pur- poses, and it is easily made by dissolving one heaping teaspoonful &f the boric acld powder in one pint of boiling wa- ter. (Copyright, 1930,) dip a turkish face cloth in hot water and lather it thickly with a pure mild soap. = After cleansing the face with the cleansing cream or oil, wash the face as usual and then hold the warm cloth over the sides of the nose for a few seconds, rubbing the soft lather in at sides of the nose very gently. Certainly men like you, who have been up and down the world and had all sorts of colorful adventures, men of your knowledge and outlook and back- ground, seldom come her way, and so if you do not marry her it is not likely that she will ever have another chance to marry a man who is your equal. She will probably have to marry some stolid farmer or some clerk, whose most thrilling line of conversation will be the price of potatoes and canned goods. Furthermore, you offer her a far more interesting life than the dull, ordered, Now it isn’'t very nice to have your son arrested for vagrancy. Answer.—Happiness in'love comes from both loving and being loved. ‘There | is desolation in giving love to one who does not return it and boredom in being loved by one for whom we have no affection, But if one could choose between the two, probably it would be better to love than to be loved. At least it would be more interesting and have more thrills in it, because those we love we are continually trying to win and it keeps us pepped up and on our tiptoes, whereas being loved by an unloved one is merely a state of being surfeited on sweets for which we have lost our appetite, DOROTHY DIX. tern in tiny polka dots in the new dusty-pink coloring. His mouth was open, his lower jaw hanging in a most foolish way. It was no wonder that Redwing chuckled more than ever. 'Peter,” said he, “what is the matter with your wits?” You haven't been using them. You have quite forgotten that a house can be in the ground as well as on the ground. Jerry Muskrat has & new house and you are sitting on the roof of it, just as he said.” “You mean——" began Peter, but Redwing interrupted him. “I mean,” said he, “that Jerry’s house is in the bank of the Smiling Pool right underdyou.” & ,\ “I don't"believe it!” snapj Peter. “Where is the entrance? Teme that. If he has & house in the ground, he must have an entrance. Where is it?” “Just where it should be,” replied Redwing good-naturedly. “Where was the entrance to Jerry's old house? That house stood out of water, but you didn’t see any entrance. Where was it?” “Under the water, of course,” replied Peter. “Every one knows that.” “‘Of course,” replied Redwing. “That is where the entrance to the home of & sensible Muskrat will always be. That is where the entrance to this new home of Jerry’s is. It is down at the bottom of the Smiling Pool right in front of where you are sitting. If you will look over the edge of the bank, you will discover it for yourself.” Peter hopped over to the edge of the bank and leaned over. He couldn't see very well, but he could see enough to feel sure that there was a hole leading into the bank right under him. He knew that the hole probably was the entrance to a hall that led up above the water to where the ground was dry and that at the end of that hole was a com- fortable bed room, in which was a com- fortable bed, and that probably Jerry Muskrat was in there at that very moment chuckling.
