BUZBY, Ine. NING |GREEN SEES LABOR STILL UNEMPLOYED “Bread Line” Not Necessary, but Many Without Perma- nent Jobs. By the Assoclated Press. Although reporting that bread lines are no longer necessary, President Wil- liam Green of the American Federation of Labor, in a statement made public to- day, said comparatively few of the city wage earners who have been unemployed since January have gone back to work permanently and others have been laid off recently. “Unemployment reports for May show very little improvement,” Mr. Green said in a statement on the situation. “Trade unions in 24 citles had as many still out of work as in the month of January, although there is usually a 27 per cent improvement by this time of year, our figures show 20 per cent out of work in Xnyfl as compared to 21 per cent in pr “The last two months have failed to show the usual Spring improvement, due partly to the serious situation in building, and also to the general slow recovery of trade and industry.” Green said after the 1928 crisis im- provement from March to May was five times as great as in the same months this year, and last year in May hardly more than half as many union members ‘were out of work. He added unemploy- ment in the metal trades was four times greater than a year ago. Discontinuance of bread lines was at- tributed to the finding of seasonal em- ployment by casual laborers who had drifted into the cities for the Winter. ‘The largest improvement reported was in the building trades, whose unem- ployment decreased from 40 per cent in April to 36 per cent in May.
