NEW YORK, May 14.—Two men on the verge of an airplanc flight around the world were asked yesterday just {what it is that leads men to under- take such periious adventures. Neither of them was able to explain. “I suppose you'd call it the spirit of adventure,” said John Heniy Mears, 50-year-old author and theatrical pro- ducer, who has wice held the record for the fastest'journey around the world and now is out to beat the time of the German dirigible Graf Zeppelin. Fied Melchior, 28-year-old pilot, who will fly Mears' planc on it world fiizh, was even less able to tell why he had obtained a leave of absence from an aii- craft company to take this journey without monetary compensation. “I just thought it would be kind of nice,” he said. Mears' first record fell because air- planes had developed and two Amer- icans weic able to reduce the time by flying part of the way. So Mears became air-minded himself and won the record back. Then last year the Graf Zeppelin went around the world and took the record to Germany. Mears and Melchior expect to get away on their world flight in about & month, — CHILDREN, LEFT ESTATE, URGED TO BE ‘GOOD JEWS’ Mrs. Straus Asks Two Sons and Daughter Not to Marry Out- side Faith.
