NEW YORK, May 14.—Steaming down New York harbor, the old troop- ship, President Grant, now the liner Republic, sailed last night with 263 gold star mothers en route to the battle- flelds and cemeteries of France. ‘Twelve and 13 years ago this Summer, the Republic used to test out her deep- throated whistle and shrill sirens at the Hoboken pier, where bands played and speeches were made last night. There were no night sailings for the Republic those days, for every night at sundown a submarine net was dragged across the narrows which form the en- trance to the upper bay. At noon she would sail, heavily camouflaged and under sealed orders, for a rendenzvous, 100 miles out, where in the night she Also aboard were 400 veterans of the 27th Division, bound for London, for their first reunion abroad. They will es- cort the New York mothers to the battleflelds where they fought and to the cemeteries where many of their comrades are buried. Miller, first Federal prohibi- tion agent to kill a man during a liquor raid, was upheld here yesterday by United States Circuit Court of Ap- peals, which refused the defendant's plea to reverse a ruling of United States District Court of Western Ken- tucky. Miller was convicted in Federal Court at Paducah, Ky., for the killing in 1925 of Frank Sears near Daniel Boone, Ky., during a search for a still.
