BALBOA, May 14—Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd had just finished writing about the superhuman accom- plishments of Fridtjof Nansen aboard the S. S. Rangitiki today when he re- cetved the news of the death of the explorer, according to a radio message recelved by Capt. H. H. Railey last night. “All explorers will feel sorry at the death of Fridtjof Nansen,” radioed Ad- BY NANSEN DEATH miral Byrd. “He was the dean of ex- plorers and one of the most romantic figures in history. I have just finished writing about the superhuman things he accomplished on his long Arctic ex- pedition and am greatly distressed at this news.” Admiral Byrd recelved a tribute in an editorial in Estrella of Panama yes- terday, which expresses astonishment at what Admiral Byrd has accom- plished. The paper says: “The famous explorer returns tri- umphant in every way after & period of hard work of a kind that does not bring quick applause, work that can- not and need not win popular acclaim. The heroic feat of the illustrious American has been in the field of pure sclence and idealistic adventure, be- cause he has not tried to win fortune or break a world record, as is the usual case in the present epoch.
