i | | PLAN INSPECTION OF MOTOR VEHICLES C. of C. Pledges Itself to Campaign and Asks Support of District Officials. The Washington Chamber of Com- merce pledged itself last night to a mo- tor vehicle inspection campaign in which it expects to have the support and co-operation of the District Com- misisoners and all branches of the mu- nicipal government. This action was taken at the regular monthly meeting Ih(athe organization in the Mayflower tel. Speaking unofficially. Assistant Traf- fic Director M. O. Ekiridge, promised that the Traffic Department would throw every effort into an attempt to make such a drive a success. The mat- ter will be laid before the Commission- ers by the chamber at earliest oppor- tunity and a request made for them to designate a day for the commencement of the “Save-a-Life” campaign and to give it their official stamp of approval. Reporting for the committee on police | s and fire protection and public safety,| Charles J. Stockman, said the cam- paign had the hearty approval of his group. He explained plans for the drive, which, he said, will be similar to safety movements in 11 other cities. Expert Offers Services. S John J. Hall of the National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters of New York, an expert promoter of such cam , offered his services as di- m:aar and the assistance of his organ- on. He said he would establish from 200, to 300 stations in the District where motorists could have their brakes and lights tested and adjusted without ex- pense. Although traffic casualties last year were greater than those caused by the World War, Washington had the best record for automotive safety of any city in the country, he asserted. Mr. Stockman reported progress in the trafic survey of Washington now going on and told the members of the action two weeks ago of the directors indorsing a bill which would establish a parole commission for the District. ‘Urges Members to Co-operate. Col. E. G. Bliss urged the individual members of the chamber to co-operate in the “clean-up” c: gai:n. sponsored by the organization. The week of May 19 hss been designated “Clean-up | Week” by the District Commissioners. All three of the commissioners were present at the meeting and spoke briefly. Gen. Herbert B. Crosby, alone of the three, made any reference to the diffi- culties he had encountered in his new ost everything I've wanted to do he declared, some one has sald w won't let you do it’.
