VETERAN FIREMEN 1S ON AIR TONIGHT “Smoky Joe” Martin to Tell Experiences in Radio Debut. “Smoky Joe” Martin, grizzled war- wor of the New York Fire Department and one of the most famous “smoke eaters” in the country, will make his radio debut tonight in a special broad- east over WRC and a network of other National Broadcasting Co, stations. “8mokey Joe” will relate some of the experiences of his 46 years as hter, Special sound effects will h heard during his talk. Radio piracy, or the pilfering of pro- grams of another broadcasting station and rebroadeasting them without per- mission or credit, is to get its first day n court. In St. Louis an unlicensed station, with having rebroadcast the ol such stations as WLW at ‘WENR, Chicago, and KMOX lnd KWK, both of St. Louls, has been haled in court for alleged vlohunn of various provisions of the radio law. Besides the actual counts of violating the law, it is alleged the ‘station played havoc with reception of other stations. George W. Fellowes of St. Louis, who s understood to be a British subject, is under indictment by the grand jury for his allegedly wayward activities. NORWAY, Iowa () —Lawrence Beck- er sits by his farm fireside and sees movies in Washington, D. 1,500 miles away. He does it with levision re- ceiver he made himself. Becker has had his apparatus, crude but serviceable, functioning since Jan- 6. Each evening he tunes in the short-wave television trans- mitter of the Jenkins Laboratories in ‘Washington, and watches intently the tal broadcasts of special mov- ing picture films. Although static causes snowstorms to apprar in the televisor on occasions, Becker reports that the pictures he re- ce'ves are unusually clear. The images are small, and only a few persons can see them at a time by crowding around fiw viellnz lens, which is a reading Despfla the handicaps of reception, there generally is a crowd at Becker's home each night from 7 to 9 o'clock, while the broadcasts are under way. Becker experimented a year before his apparatus worked satisfactorily. HOOVER GOING ON AIR Tribute to War Dead to Be Broad- east by Two Radio Chains. A tribute to America's war dead, to be made by President Hoover in an ad- dress at the National Cemetery at Get- tysburg, Pa., on Memorial day, will be broadcast over Nation-wide radio chains by the National Broadcasting Co. and the Columbia Broadcasting System. ‘The memorial services, which will include the President’s address, will be broadcast by N.
