NEW YORK, May 6—Physicians to the Stock Market reported today that the patient was resting more quietly and showing fairly pronounced signs of recovery after the recent attack of con- vulslons, They were inclined to take | a conservative view, however, indicating | that intermediate setbacks would not be unusual in a case of this sort. | Strength at Opening. : Stocks began the day with a further | outburst of strength, as the short-cov- | ering movement which caused the vio- | lent upswing late yesterday was com- pleted. Advances of 2 to 5 points were | common, with a few erratic issues mak- gains. The market soon turned rather wishy-washy, however, as speculation for the rise was largely held in abeyance pending more definite test- | ing of the price level, and in-and-out traders who bought at yesterday's low levels took their profits. As the mar- | ket turned dull around midday, with the | ticker running well abreast of trans- actions, and renewed pressure failed to | appear. bullish operations in the utili- | tles were resumed and practically the | entire market showed a strong upward | trend during the early afternoon. | Trading soon turned dull on the rally, however, Credit_conditions remeined favorable, with call loans renewing at 3'z per cent and the rate later dropping to 3 Business news was for the most part scarcely of a character to influence the market. The further cut in copper prices caused some liquidation of the coppers during the morning, but losses were moderate, Chain store sales re- ports for April are largely favorable. but comparisong are made difficult by the later date of Easter. Cuts in steel wire products by independents had been foreshadowed last week. Reports from California oil circles indicated that some trouble is being experienced with the curtailment program at Santa Fe Springs. but settlement without re- newed price cutting is expected. Utilities in Advance. The forward movement in the utill- ties carried such issues 8s American Power & Light, North American, Ameri- can Water Works, Western Union, Standard Gas and American Telephon up nearly 10 points. Investment rails joined the advance, such issues as Southern Railway, Chesapeake & Ohio, New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, | Atchison and Union Pacific mounting 4 ta 8 points. Such shares as Radio, U. S. Steel and General Electric recorded gains of a point or two after absorbing considerable sclling during the morn- ing. but attracted renewed pressure and advances were not well maintained.
