Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 6.—After a strong opening, today’s Curb Market turned dull and though prices remained slight- ly above their Monday closing levels, there was no tendency to press the ad- vance. At the start there was an accumula- tion of overnight orders, much of it consisting of short covering and some of speculative buying on the theory that at present levels stocks offer an oppor- tunity for a substantial profit when the eventual recovery takes place. Money was still low—4 per cent at the Curb Exchange Post. Electric Bond & Share, American Su- R!rpower. Niagara Hudson and olher eavily traded issues rose 1 to 4 in early trading, dropped part of t! u in the dull period that followed and ad- vanced again fractionally when a mod- erate rally took hold at noon. As a group the public utilities gave the best account of themselves. Asso- clated Gas & FElectric was 4 points higher in early trading. American Com- monwealth Power B showed a gain at this stage of 3 points, Central States Electric 3, Eastern States Power B 3, Northern States Power A 5 and United Light & Power A 1!, points. All of them remained well below their highs of last week, however, and the market showed little disposition to return to those levels quickly. Citles Service started slightly lower on a 13,300-share block, ran up to an equally small net gain on the day, and then sagged again. The oils generally were strong. Guif Oil of Pennsylvania ran up 3 points and there were substan- tial gains in the list of Standard Oil affliates. ‘Amusement stocks were quiet with the exception of Technicolor, which rose §, points in active Aviati shares, gas company stocks, industri pipe line shares, railroads, motors ad Mining stocks, however, were weak the further drop in the price of copper. Newmont was a point lower. Noranda ‘Was an exception, up over a point. Deere & Co. featured the high-priced indus- trials with a quick run-up in active trading and then fell back again. NEW YORK, May 6.—London ad- vices today announced that the Copper Exporters’ Association had reduced the price of copper, c.if., European base ports, 1 cent a pound, bringing the price to 13.30 cents a pound. ‘The move was expected in the trade here and followed closely on the action of a group of leading American pro- ducers in reducing the domestic price 1 cent to 13 cents a pound yesterday, the lowest since 1927. The reduction in the domestic price was the second within a month, a 4-cent cut from the old 18-cent level having been made Period Last Year. Special Dispatch to The Star. ATLANTA, May 6.—Total savings de- posits at the end of March reported by 73 banks in the district averaged one- half of 1 per cent larger than a month earlier, and were six-tenths of 1 per cent larger than at the end of March, 1929. Increases over February at At- lanta, New Orleans and other cities outweighed declines at Birmingham, Jacksonville and Nashville. Compared with March last year, decreases were reported from Atlanta, Birmingham and Jacksonville, but increases at other points. Figures in the table show totals and comparisons for ‘Atlanta and for cities in which branches of the Federal Reserve Bank are located, and reports from banks located elsewhere in lhe district are grouped under “other cities.” Business statistics for March show increases over earHer months of the year in the volume of retail and whole- sale distribution of merchandise, in prospective building and construction activity as indicated by both permits issued at reporting cities and statistics of contracts awarded in the district, in output of reporting cotton cloth and yarn mills, and in the production of pig iron in Alabama. The amount of Federal Reserve Bank credit outstanding in this district de- clined further between March 12 and April 9, and holdings of discounted bills on that date were smaller than for any other weekly report date in five years. Loans to customers by weekly reporte ing member banks in the district in- creased slightly between March 12 and April 15. NATIONAL BANKS SHOW DECREASE IN RESOURCES By the Associated Press.
