Commerce Department In- spectors Sent to Attica, Where Three Lost Lives. | | By the Associated Press. ATTICA, N. Y. April 24—Depart- ment of Commerce inspectors were or- dered here today to investigate an air- plane accident in which Maj. Lionel M. Woolson, widely kncwn motor designe: and chief aeronautical engineer for the Packard Motor Co., and two companions were killed. Maj. Weolson, Carl B. Knight, chief test pilot for the Verville Aircraft Corpo- ration of Detroit, and Harold B. Scutt, a pilot, of Douglastcn, N. Y., lost their lives when the Diesel-motored Verville plane they were flying from Detroit to New York crashed into a hillside during a severe snowstorm. The party left Detroit at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, stopped at Buffalo, N. Y., for lunch and had been in the air but a shorl time on their way to New Yok when they ran into a heavy snow. A gang of men working on the tracks of the Attica & Arcade Rallroad said they heard the plane pass overhead going east, then a few minutes later heard it returning. Then there was a crash as the plane struck the side of a hill and rolled into a ravine. Pilot Probably Blinded. Officials who viewed the wreck said they believed Scutt had been piloting the plane at the time and was at- tempting to make a landing to await clearing weather when, blinded by the snow flurry, he falled to see the hill until it was too late. The Diesel aircraft motor, which operated on fuel oil instead of gasoline, thereby reducing the fire hazard in air- planes, was the last accomplishment in Maj. Woolson's career as a motor de- signer. He was 42 years old. He joined the Army air service in 1917 and was_assigned to McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, as superintendent of ground testing of airplane motors. After the war he joined the Packard Motor Co. engineering staff and devel- cped a series of aircraft motors of 1,500, 800 and 500 horsepower, which were . |used in several record-breaking speed ITE HITE TEES 35c Per Hundred TOY _AND Wholesale and Retail ATLANTIC CI EUROPEAN PLAN Established for. sixty years. During the last 10 years he was en- gaged in experiments to adapt’ the Die- sel_engine principle to aircrait motors and was ciedited with having solved the weight_problem, which had balked previous_eflorts to design Diesel air- craft motors. He designed the engines on the Navy il | dirigible Shenandoah and also the motor in the seaplane in which Comdr. John Rodgers made his distance recerd with a flight to Honolulu in 1925. He designed the motors used in a large number of Navy fighting aircraft and motors which were used in Gar Wood's boats in the Harmsworth trophy races. He leaves a wife and two children at his home in Detroit. Knight, whose home was in Uniontown, Pa., is survived by three sisters and two brothers in Richmond, Va. He was 23 years old. Scutt recently obtained a transport pilot's license. He was mar- ried and the father of two children. He was 39 years old. b BEAUTY GIVEN DIVORCE Mrs. Paul Bradford Keeler, 1923 Winner, Charged Cruelty.
