P THE \R,_WASIHI NGTON. D. - HILL LAYS FRAUD 70 PALMISANO Counsel Charges Member of House With Electioneering in Polling Place. By the Associated Press. Charges of fraud were made today by the attorney for John Philip Hill, Republican, as the hearing on the election contest brought by Hill against Representative Palmisano, Democrat, of the third Maryland district, opened to- day before a House elections sub- committee. The attorney, Charles Ruzicka, charged that Palmisano had made his home precinct, the fourth precinct of the third ward, his political head- quarters on election day, “sending out Tunners all day long to gather in votes.” Ruzicka also charged that fraudulent ‘Yotes came out of Palmisano’s own resi- dence. Palmisano, Ruzicka said, elec- tioneered in the polling place, asking voters to cast a “straight Democratic ballot,” though the law forbade elec- tioneering within 100 feet. Ruzicka’s charges included: “Illegal registration; voting repeaters; includ- ing a woman; substitution of ballots; illegal counting: Jrregularities in count- ing; unauthorized handling of ballots: yegistering of five unknown voters; | ing of two convicts, and register- ing of a sailor then on the Pacific on the U. S. S. Lexington,” all in Palmi- sano's home precinct. Ruzicka exhibited a poll list showing yegistrations of two persons, both of ‘whom he claimed were in Hagerstowm, Md., although listed as living in quar- ters over the Palmisano garage, at | that time unoccupied. | ‘The committee members examined | with much interest Hill's exhibits of al fraud and gave Ruzicka an added half hour for his opening state- ment, which, he explained, had to sum- | marize 4,200 pages of testimony. BERKELEY, Calif,, February 17— Beta Cephei, the mysterious Milky Way star, which expands and contracts as though it were breathing, at last has a biography. A summary of known facts concerning the star, interpreted in the light of recent, observation at the Lick Observatory of the University of Cali- fornia, has been completed by H. S. Mendenhall, graduate student. Mendenhall’s interpretations were said to lend weight to the theory that Beta Cephei is contracting and expanding once in every four and one half hours. This is such a terrific rate of speed from a terrestrial point of view that it appears to be moving toward and away from the earth- at a velocity tUARY 17. 1930, A-3 24 Hours Estimate of Beta reaching a maximum of % miles gt (o about 9% mile Beta Cephei is a variable star in the constellation Cepheus. It is best visible in the northern sky during July or August. Its distance from the earth is 2stimated roughly at 2,000,000,000,000,000 miles, and Mendenhall estimated its diameter at almost 2,000,000 miles, more than twice that of the sun. In addition to the apparent velocity caused by contraction and expansion of its surface five times a day, Beta Cephel seems to have another motion. This was said \37 Mendenhall to be a rot: tion around some other star in a period of 20 years. Completion of this orbit would require 20 times as long as the earth takes to revolve around the sun. Velocity of this rotation is something over 3 miles a second. REBUILT LINER READY FOR NEW YORK VOYAGE | | North German Lloyd Boat Europa | Completely Refinished Since | March Fire.
