Bechrach Phaton Innovations Introduced In Official Social Program Win Full Meed of Praise A President and 5 Mrs. Hoover Condratulated on Plans for State Functions—Cabinet Belle to Be Feted—Lee Foundation Dinner and Benefit. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. OCIETY through one of its most interesting periods last week, when for the first time in its sccial history a real inno- vation was introduced in its list of official state receptions and the President and Mrs. Hoover entertained more than a thou- sand guests in honor of members of the United States Senate and the wives and daughters of the august body. Exceeding dignity and a wonderful ‘degree of comfcrt accompanied the event; and as the First Lady of the Land is not a mere faddist in thinking out social affairs of state, it is hoped the changes made by her have come to stay. MOR!: Senators were met in the White House Thursday night than have been there on a single occasion in many years, and, accom- panied by handsome women in the handsomest gowns and jewels, one was given an opportunity to judge the body singly and in a manner never before afforded. Indeed, several Senators were attend- ing a White House reception for the first time in years, while with the new Senators it was their introduction to the Chief Executive and the First-Lady as hosts. THURSDAY night the President and Mrs. Hoover will entertain at dinner in honor of the Speaker of the House and Mrs. Longworth, the event to be followed by a musicale, and the following Thursday the Army and Navy will parade before the President and his lady in their finest regimentals. Next to the diplomatic reception, which yet remains an unfulfilled engagement on the calendar for this season, the Army-Navy reception is most brilliant. The women of this branch of society have always been noted for their handsome gowns and jewels, and many men of note in both branches of the service are stationed here this Winter. MPORTANT on the week’s social schedule is the festivity in the home of Secretary and Mrs. Lamont, when tomorrow they hold a reception to present their daughter, Miss Gertrude Lamont, to their friends, while later in the week there will be a dance for her. In the embassies and legations there is continuous entertainment, often for the notables from their own countries who are paying their respects to Washington. ONE of Washington’s favorite lecturers—Prof. Louis K. Anspacher— will engage society in its more serious mocd for several weeks, his first lecture here for the season being arranged for the morning o? Wednesday, February 12, when he will talk on “Shakespeare as a Poet,” the series of four lectures being given for the benefit of the George Washington Memorial Association and each one on Shakespeare. TUESDAY the Robert E. Lee Foundation dinner will be given at the Willard, when a wealth of Southern history will unfold before a distinguished audience of several hundred guests who will fill the great ball room of the hotel. Several of the descendants of Robert E. Lee will be present, and the speakers are well chosen. ’I'HE brilliancy of the Bal Boheme of the Washington Arts Club will long lingér in the minds of hundreds who attended it as the most beautiful, colorful and artistic ball ever given at the Willard. 1t is a matter of civic pride that society in all its varied aspects took interest in the event, and, for the benefit of the new woman, it is nice to know that a woman was chairman of the ball committee and that women headed about all of the important committees except that of providing the luxuries and comforts of the seated supper. A tea is being %iven at the Arts Club this afternoon for Mr. and Mrs. Howard Chandler Christie and Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Tuckerman, judges of costume, when the prizes will be awarded. Cabinet Woman Heads List for Bachelors’ Ball The third of the 1929-30 serles of ‘Washington Bachelors’ cotillons, which have been among the season’s most in- teresting and charming social events, will take place Monday evening, Febru- ary 10, in the grand ball room and Chinese room of the Mayflower. This will be the last one of the cotillons this season. Mrs. James J. Davis, wife of the Sec- retary of Labor, will head the receiv- ing line at the ball on February 10. Others in line will be Mrs. Henry J. Allen, wife of Senator Allen of Kansas; Mrs. Wilbur J. Carr, Mrs. Thomas Sim ee and Mrs. Jacob Leander Loose. Maj. Gen. No boxes will be assigned at the next cotillon except the one for the chap- erones, the other boxes being avallable for use of the members and their guests.
