NEW YORK, February 1—The stock market closed today with an outburst of strength which lifted the index of 90 leading stocks to the highest level since the November 13 break. Total -lu fell just short of 2,000,000 shares, the largest Saturday volume this year. ‘The ticker did not record the final quotation until 22 minutes after the market had closed. Much of today's buying was in- fluenced by the ability of the market to absorb the !lllnl orders placed around the December highs. “Bear” traders, who had sold stocks heavily earlier in the year, rushed to cover as buying orders for the so-called invest- ment issues appeared in large volume, and pools continued to mnxk up & wide assortment of specialties. Motors Heavily M‘hl. Motors, which are believed to harbor & larger short interest than any other noup were heavily bought in the last hour. General Motors advanced 2 points to 443, and closed at the top. ‘while Mack Trucks and Hudson Motors each advanced 2% points. Apparently lll’B! blocks of United States Steel common were offered around 185, because the stock was forced back up each time it approached that level, and closed the day at 18415 for a net loss of 13 of a point. West- inghouse Electric, whlch had a sharp run up yesterday, closed nearly a point Jower. Montgomery Ward, Standard Ofl of New Jersey and American Smelting also r!eotded slight declines. New York & Harlem retained all but 4 points of an extreme gain of 44 points on top of a 47-point gain of yesterday.
