COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, February 1.—A 5-point rise in American Telephone convertible 4'9s was the outstanding price change in the bond market today. The de- bentures crossed 149 to a new 1930 high on -active buying which accom- panied therrise in the shares. Otherwise the list was quiet and dull, except for a few fairly wide swings in semi-speculative listings. Pathe 7s de™ clined nearly 2!2 points. Colombia Agricultural Bank 6s, 1947, rallied 1%. Sog_Line 6s lost 2. The prospective offering of a $32,- 000,000 issue of Siemen’s & Halske long-term debentures represents the largest piece of German .industrial financing in Some ‘time. Improve. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 1.—Depres- sions in major farm products this week contrasted with the stronger undertone in the stock market. Both wheat and cotton fell sharply in price, the former to & new low level for the season and the latter to a point not previously touched in several years. Various other agricultural commodities also declined is week, contributing largely to the continued excess of reductions in Dun’s list of wholesale quotations. Thus, 37 out of a total of 58 changes were in a downward direction, while 31 of last week’s 50 alterations were toward a lower basis. A year ago, on the other hand, advances and recessions were closely in balance, with 32 of 68 re- visions representing increases. In view of price .movements in January, the monthly index number, which will soon be. compiled, seems almost certain to show another drop, o CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET CHICAGO, February 1 (#).—(United States Department of ~Agriculture).— Cattle—Receipts, 200 head; compared one week ago, better grade fed steers, 25a50 higher on forced market; weighty kinds up most; largely lhlppe'l‘ trade; upturn utulnw on kinds of value to sell at 13.00 and above; lower grade steers, steady to 25 lower; light year- lings, 50 down; beef cows and butcher heifers, 75a1.00 lower; bulls, 50a75 off, and vealers, 15002.00 down; steers scarce; extreme top, 16.00, for lightweight mixed yearlings. above 14.50; best heavies, 15.0( fed steers, 11.50a13.50; killing quality plain; replacement cattle scarce, but weak to 25 lower at 9.50a10.75 mostly; undertone general trade closed dull in face of very sluggish dressed market. BALTIMORE, Md., February 1.—Al- though receipts of eggs have been only moderate the past week and light from native and nearby points, the market has fluctuated considerably, values de- clining as high as 5 cents a dozen the early part of the week, and while still unsettled recovered to some extent the latter part-and closed today with a firmer tendency. For desirable fresh stock, grading firsts, there is fairly, prompt sale, but offerings of doubtful quality, as well as held stock, are slow to find favor, even at discounts. The market closed today at 39 and 40 cents Poultry Market, ‘The live poultry market continues ldh under generally light receipts, y of large, fat stock, but ample , poor, thin fowl, which is slow Demand limited for turkeys, and only young hens and gobblers, 8 ds and over, attract attention, at 32 to 34 eenu & pound for the former and 30 for the latter, while old toms, as well as crooked breasts, are slow sale at 20 Yo 22. Young chickens, 3% pounds and over, in good demand, especially boilers, which bring top prices of 29 to 33, but Leghorns not so desirable and nmnuy slcw sale at 22 to 25. OIld hens in ample receipt for the demand, which is only fair, at 26 to 29 for fowl weigh- s ol 8. ing 4 pounds and over, but smaller, as well as Leghorns, move slow at 23 to 25, while all poor, thin fowl is neglected at Capons in good demand, especially birds weighting 7 pounds and over, which bring 33 to 36, but smaller not so desirable at 30 to 32, while old roosters are slow sale at 17 and 18. Ducks and geese in light supply, and market holds steady at 20 to 26 for the former and 18 to 28 for the latter, but stock weighing less than 4 not poun wanted, and will not bring over 16 to | 18. Market for guinea fowl md? holds firm, at 40 to 60 each for the former and 25 to 30 a pair for both young and old of the latter. Potato Prices. ‘White potatoes in excessive receipt, especially from distant points, and ac- cumulations are so heavy the Pennsyl- vania Railroad has dael-red an embargo on further shipments. This has reacted to the benefit of native and nearby stock, which is brought here mostly by truck or boats, and the market holds steady at 275 to 3.00 per hundred pounds for No. 1 stock, while ungraded potatoes sell mostly 2.25 to 2.65. Market for sweet potatoes and yams generally dull, especially for ordinary stock, which has to be sold at a discount, but well vy the past week, native and nearby garden truck is in very light reulpt, and the market holds firm, with prices higher, at the following quouuom Cabbage, 1.00 to 1.25 basket; carrots, 3.00 and 4.00 hundred; kale, 1.50 to Tinared pounds; persnips, o0 1o 80 bas ket; lptnlch, 1.25 to 1.35. bushel, and turnips, 40 to 50 hamper.
