THE * SCHIOLFAGUTE. | [ v INERAVERCAY LAUDED BY TUFTS [ Few Realize Busmess Impor- tance of Educational Ad- vantages, He Declares. ‘Washington’s educational facilities | have been expanded at a phenomenal Tate since 1915, bringing a multitude «of additional advantages to the National Capital as an educational center, Col. ‘Willlam O. Tufts declared last night in m address The act of the late Judge Edwin B. | Parker of the Mixed Claims Commission | in leaving the bulk of his $2000000 estate to establish a graduate school of international affairs, to be located here and affiliated with a local university, is one more of the noteworthy develop- ments which are coming into Wash- ington to make it even more a world capital, sald Col. Tufts, who is chair- man of the committee on universities, colleges and private schools of the Washington Chamber of Commerce. Speaking in the weekly series of talks broadcast under auspices of the cham- ber, Col. Tufts declared that few realize the business importance of the un- paralleled educational advantages offer- ed by this city. “Leaving the question of the local fibflc school system out of the picture.” said, “we still have approximately. 50,000 students in private schools within the metropolitan area of Washington. If we conservatively estimate the average annual expenditure per student ! at $1,500 and consider that half of the number. mentioned are local residents. ‘we would still have an_expenditure of about - $38,000,000 in Washington by out-of-town students, “There are about 200 private schools of various types and kinds in the Dis- trict, These figures do not include the special training schools maintained by the War and Navy Departments, the Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Standards and other Federal de- partments and agencies.” Since 1900 there have been 111 schools establfshed here, and of this number 58 have been added since 1915, he said. ‘The curricula of Washington's private schools, the speaker continued, show a rich variety of subjects and courses, ‘with institutions devoted to religious training and to the arts and sciences predominating.
