Thurston Fights Claim for Back Taxes, But Fortifies Self Against Losing Case Howard Thurston, the magician, play- ing at a local theater last week, is satis- fled he has straightened out his tangled income tax affairs but the Government is wondering whether it gains or loses as a result of the transaction. Uncle Sam's tax experts notified Mr., Thurston sometime ago that he owed the Treasury about $800 in back income taxes. ‘The magician, taking time off from his show, went to the Board of Tax Ap- peals and argued that there must be some mistake. P. R. Shearer, internal revenue at- torney, explained all the intricate processes by which the Government had arrived at the conclusion that $800 was due it. ‘Thurston, minus the services of a legal adviser, frankly admitted he was baffied for the first time in his life. “I can’t uni d_your reasoning,” he said. “It's all a puzzle-to me.” Pinally it was agreed to defer definite adjudication of the matter for several months. “But say,” Thurston said, turing to BAZAAR NETS $1,600. ‘Hamline M.
