THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. D. C, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1929. Unc’ Billy Grows Bolder. petite. 50 we are told BORt e makes the timid_bold —Old Mother Nature, Unc' Billy Possum sat down on the stone wall along the edge of the Old Orchard. Bushes w along that old stone wall and so Unc' Billy was hid- den. But he could look out and see what was going on. Now, it was not far from the end of the old stone wall over to the chicken yard of Farmer Brown's Boy. It was dusk, almost dark. Farmer Brown's Boy had shut up the hens for the night. Unc’ Billy had watched him do it and dreadful dis- appointment had taken possession of i il - .\|\\ im o yiicasy - THAT HOLE LED UNDER THE FLOOR OF THE HENHOUSE. e —— through the bushes. He peered across toward the henyard. He looked over toward Farmer Brown's house. Ie could see the lighted windows. “Ah reckon ah can look around.a little and hurt no one,” said Unc' Billy to himself. “Ah reckon there isn't anythin’' to be afraid of right now.” So Unc’ Billy grew bolder and shuf- fled across over to the henhouse. He could hear the hens stirring uneasily inside. Now and then there was a low clugk. Unc’ Billy's mouth watered. It seemed to him that never inall his life had he wanted anything as he now wanted one of those hens. He couldn't think of anything else, He knew that if he could get into that henhouse there would be no trouble in getting one of those hens. The first thing was to get in there. The next thing would be to get one of those stupid birds without awakening the others. He had no doubt that he could do this if only he could get in there. So Unc' Billy went around the hen- house hoping he might find a hole whereby he might get in. He did find a hole used by Robber the Rat one time, but it was not big enough for Unc’ Billy to get throug! poke his ne , however, and did so. That hole led under the floor of the henhouse. Unc’ Billy didn’t smell hens there, so he concluded there was no hole in the floor. It do him no good if he could get under there. 8o he withdrew his nose and continued on around. When Unc’ Billy came to the high wire fence of the henyard he stopped to consider. It would an easy mat- ter for to climb that fence. Noth- co! be easler. He could climb up one and down the other. Then he would be inside the henyard. There Mbewwmmvelchmumtrymt from | yittle door to the henhouse—the one Across. & table substance used in ishes, etc. D] = XIDIR] SN the hens used. The big door he knew was closed and locked. Somehow, he didn’t just like getfing inside that hen- yard. He knew he could get out again Jjust as easily as he could get in; but he couldn’t help the feeling that it was a sort of pen. So for 'a long he hesitated. At last he became bold. He started up the wire, close to one of the posts. n he reached the of the post he sat there for a Wi Then he climbed inside. (Copyright,” 1920.) 58. Close by. 59.
