CENTRAL HEATRG PLNTIS U AGAN Officials Corisider Single Sys- tem for New Government Building Program. ‘With administration leaders pledged to a more comprehensive development of the National Capital by additional appropriations to be asked of the next Congress, meeting in December, new and serious study is being given to the need, possible location and size of a great central heating plant to furnish heat to all Government buildings east of the White House and west of the Capitol. Officials of both the Treasury Depart- ment and the Office of Public Buildings and Public Parks of the National Capi- tal haye renewed their consideration of the question, which has been proposed ©ff and on for several years. The new buildings which are already under construction here as part of the Government's huge housing program for the Capital are being provided with heating plants which can be used fs “break-down” plants in case of any emergency later on, should the great |G central plant be installed. SAN FRANCISCO, November 15.—The 1930 social register for San Francisco, just published, includes the name of the Presi- dent of the United States. ‘The names of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover are nothing new to the register, however, as they have been included for many years. But this is the first year they have appeared in the regis- ter as “Hoover—The President and Mrs. Herbert Clark (Lou Henry), u:ecwmtc House, Wash- Ingwn, D. C. 'he name of Miss Helen Wills is not in the register and never has been. But it will be when she marries her fiance, Frederick 8. Moody.d]r., ‘who has been regu- larly listed. James Rolph, jr., is in the reg- ister, which neglects to mention his having been mayor of San Francisco 17 years. The names of many bankers are present, but not that of A. P. Giannini, one of the best known Californians in the financial world. Meat Frozen for Oven. New Zealand is trying a method of meat storage which is expected to bring about a change in the butcher shops in America, and eventually in the world. Beef and mutton will be cut into steaks, hops, roasts and other pieces before refrigeration and shipment to this country. All superfluous fat and bone will be trimmed away and each piece covered in strong transparent wrap- ping. When the housewife receives it, it will be ready for the oven or pan. A).—To be as poor as a church mouse is to be very well off in the village of Kaluga, for there they have turned the churches into granaries richly stored. The local commissar was unable to find adequate storage for the corn, 50 he had the altar windows of the churches removed and the grain poured in through chutes. The commissar will have to be watchful lest the church mouse starts entertain- ing his lay friends on a lavish scale. Economy Proven. Economy of heating by a central plant already has been proven in, the Gavernment_service, as_there are at Jeast three big central heating plants now in operation to care for three groups of buildings. One plant takes care of the legislative group of build- ings on Capitol Hill; another, in the State, War and Navy Building, heats this structure, the White House and some other buildings, and the third big plant, erected a few years ago near Nineteenth and B streets, heats what is known as the Potomac group of build- ings, including the huge Navy Building &and its adjoining Munitions Building.
